Why is the problem that your organization is solving important to you and your co-founders/team?
We are urbanites, living in cities around the world. We have all seen climate change's impacts, especially living in NYC after Hurricane Sandy, and our Aussie side living in smoldering cities effected by heatwaves that kill in droves. We believe there is a need to change the way we address climate preparedness in our cities, as we have all seen first hand the destruction brought by extreme events and natural disasters, and know that there is a better way, it's just not being done because the data isn't there. What compels our team, is that we know we can make a difference now, more than ever.
Please provide 1-2 examples of your product/organization making an impact on a city.
We are currently working with Bendigo City Council, having deployed 47/100 heat sensors to monitor heat stress/risk and impact across the city. The outcome of this project will be to better understand where the stresses occur when they are likely to occur (as to avoid areas or provide warming) and then monitor the council's intervention if they decide to intervene/see it necessary.
This is a pilot and we are using this city (Bendigo) as a way to build out a more robust platform.

Fast forward 15-20 years. What does your organization look like? What is the impact that it's had on society?
SensCity, is a common name in citymaking. When a developer/planner or environmental consultant is looking at a property, they automatically plug into SenscIty's database to see what the risk profile is of the area and know automatically, what type of building or intervention needs to be there (from decades of collecting data). They can price out their risk, assess the level of intervention and report back to a compliance authority with ease knowing they used SensCity's software to assess the site.
We will have helped almost every city in the world measure and manage their climate resilience.
What differentiates your organization? What makes it so that you can drive a bigger and better benefit to society than other organizations in this space?
We truly believe in making a difference for humanity, our founders (4/5) (Shaun's a diehard software guy ;) all work in the urban social/ ecologocial research space (or have), making our team very focused on advancing knowledge and expanding our work for public benefit. Our partnerships give us a leg up in driving a bigger and better benefit, as we can use our technology to reach out into organizations (C100, Arcadis, CSIRO) that build and shape cities. Our team is ready for the next step, and have built a network around us that we can pull from to take it there.
What is the key barrier today to your organization unlocking the maximum amount of impact on society?
Right now, we need more pilots, and some financing to get us there. We are developing our product as fast as we can, with limited resources, which is slowing us down, and the amount of pilots we hope to learn from is limited at this. Therefore, with the addition of financing (expanding team) and a few more well-placed pilots, we will be able to show how we can be used across Government/insurance/property more effectively and help decision-makers, make the right choices for our future.
