Why is the problem that your organization is solving important to you and your co-founders/team?
The problem we're trying to solve is the elimination of single use plastic from FMCG supply chains. Aside from climate change itself, we cannot think of a more pressing problem. By some estimates there is more plastic by mass in the ocean than there is fish.
We have chosen to proactively contribute to this necessary change.
We have started our first commercial trials with North America's largest FMCG group and have produced smart packaging to cut plastic use in feminine care products. As we grow, so will the range of products we can package to help eliminate the use of single-use plastic.
Please provide 1-2 examples of your product/organization making an impact on a city.
This is one of our fist commercial prototypes. It is being used by one of North America's largest FMCG groups in preliminary trials. We expect to be able to formally announce expanded trials in 6-8 weeks. It allows our client to change the packaging on sanitary pad products, removing the need for the external plastic wrap (which is largely non-recyclable today).
Fast forward 15-20 years. What does your organization look like? What is the impact that it's had on society?
Our vision is on a grand scale. We see households with 30 or more smart packages for all of life's essentials. All basic grocery shopping will be eliminated in favour of a proactive delivery system, that uses an autonomous electric vehicle to deliver all required items in advance.
Everything you need for your home or business will arrive with no hassle and more importantly, no plastic. It will reduce traffic pollution and the use of plastic in cities. It will also increase productivity by reducing wasted time on shopping for repeated goods or essentials, thereby encouraging consumer adoption.
What differentiates your organization? What makes it so that you can drive a bigger and better benefit to society than other organizations in this space?
We believe our groundbreaking approach will help tackle current sustainability concerns through a viable, practical approach to the re-ordering of products. Our platform simultaneously reduces plastic-use in the FMCG chain and reduces the time-consuming reordering processes; which in turn provides the economic and behavioural incentives for individuals or companies to behave more environmentally responsible.
The entire solution, including devices, platform, app and linkage between all three, was created in-house by our expert team. Our combined skills make us a formidable force in the field.
What is the key barrier today to your organization unlocking the maximum amount of impact on society?
During the early stages of development, we dedicated our time and effort to creating our innovative approach to eliminate single use plastic from FMCG supply chains. We are now excited to announce that we have progressed into the trial-phase, with some of North America's (and the world's!) largest FMCG groups trialing the system. However, we would like to expand these trials, target more companies and progress with commercial success. This requires more resources and capital: the funding from the QBE and Ashoka Urban Resilience Challenge would help us achieve our goals.
