Date You Started Your Project Started

Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Established (successfully passed early phases, have a plan for the future)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

We are trying to reduce and possibly eliminate the amount of youth with mental illnesses and not being able to find a therapy that will work for them. This problem can arise from genetics or trauma that occurs in the past. The problem of not being able to afford or find a therapy that will actually suit people based on their financial and mental predicaments.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

We will change the cost of therapy to make it more affordable for people who are stable enough. Also, we are making therapy more comfortable and accessible to underrepresented communities. Our app will squash the nervousness of having to open up to a stranger and implement therapists who understand the trauma and can effectively treat patients electronically.

3. Using STEM as a force of good: Please specify how are you using STEM to solve for an environmental challenge you are passionate about.

Augmented reality is a form of technology that brings a fake/simulated environment into the real world. We are using augmented reality(technology) to make our app more authentic and accessible. Considering some patients cannot get to a therapist or mental health centers are just not in the area. Using augmented reality can bring the therapist to the patient!.

4. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

What motivated us to start this project is that in the minority community mental health is not as supported as it should be. Therapy is considered only for "crazy" people. It would improve the social environment so much if the community could band together through something we all use avidly such as technology. This whole group has been through trauma and mental turmoil and knows how it feels to not be able to find a therapy that will really help and support them which is why we came up with TheARpist.

A great product that is needed in today's world. An idea would be to reach out the NotOk App team. ( Their organization is working to eradicate the mindset that you have to be ok 100% of the time. It's ok to ask for help if you need it. I think there could be potential to work with them. Their team is youth led as well!
