1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

People often want to do better for the environment but recycle incorrectly. For this game, after they are quizzed they can publish to social media. This is a common technique used for everything from, “What celebrity do you look like?” to, “How good is your grammar?”

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

Code an app: a game where you drop trash into 3 different cans, and you get points if you guess correctly where it goes: trash, recycle, compost. The compost ones are tougher to guess and that feature is meant to inspire people to start doing it more, for example set up a bin in their yard

3. Using STEM as a force of good: Please specify how are you using STEM to solve for an environmental challenge you are passionate about.

We will use C++ to code this app.

4. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

I was part of an AppJam challenge at school and we were asked to think of solutions to help the environment. That was in a language that is not as applicable to everyone, so I would like to advance the game, correct some of the details, etc. and make it more acceptable by doing it in C++.

6. Please highlight the key activities you have carried out to bring your project to life.

Presented at a large assembly at my middle school. Developed the app at AppJam and been recognized by California Senator Ling Ling Chang for it!

7. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Teachers can use it for "class points" or an assignment like they do right now with IXL, Accelerated Reading, etc.

8. Impact: In the last three months, please detail the impact your project has made?

Publicity: about the game at Girl Scouts, district classrooms, social media, and at Orange County Coder.

9. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

We have established partnerships with youth-led 501c3 organization Kids and Smiles and through Gen2Gen with the Yorba Linda Woman's Club. This will create an intergenerational network of people playing the game.

10. Please share how you have influenced other young people to get involved in your project and/or care about environmental sustainability.

We enlisted volunteers to hold it as a game/activity at Kids and Smiles' (youth-run 501 C3) annual Easter Egg Hunt, to collect new toys for pediatric patients, and raise money for local scholarships. The event typically raises aorund $60,000. We were supposed to do it again this year, but unfortunately, because of the current situation, the egg hunt was cancelled.

11. Please share ideas of how you can partner with other changemakers to make a difference?

Our organization can be a tool for schools to for developing an understanding of today’s challenges and choices that we all face as humans, and the meaning of a sustainable way of living. This app is only an example of what can be done. We can go much broader than this if we have more minds and more resources

12. How would you engage others who have never heard about your project to get their buy-in?

Half of the world’s population is under 25 years old. Youth need to connect together to understand and facilitate solutions in political turmoil, the environment, and other issues. Like with many other things, such as reading, art, music, and sports, it is better to be exposed young; youth leadership is no different. Together we can create a world where young people can create social change. If not us then who? And if not now, then when?
