Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Start-Up (first few activities have happened)

1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."

2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

While NGOs lack human capital to fulfill their missions, youth organizations seek opportunities to gain real world experience, and human resources of corporations lack authentic methods to track youth skill sets and performance. Although these needs can be addressed by connecting stakeholders, there are few multi-stakeholder platforms at a grassroots level. This inefficiency has hindered the development of great causes, talent, and services.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

Partner 17, inspired by the United Nations SDG17- creating partnerships to achieve SDGs, seeks to address the inefficiencies in the existing multi-stakeholder platforms by finding a win-win solution for everyone through our matching and project management services. We match NGOs and youth organizations, creating sustainable and productive relationships. We then provide a centralized project management platform to facilitate the engagement of the stakeholders in pro-bono projects, such as consulting, research, and data analysis. Youth can upload progress and findings on to the platform, and NGOs can monitor their work progress. Thus, NGOs receive inexpensive, quality services and youth gain work experience. Furthermore, with the permission of youth, we will provide corporations with performance data gathered on our project management platform in exchange for recruiting opportunities. Performance data is data that reflects a person’s work style and effectiveness, and can complement a job seeker’s resume and interviews, portraying a more accurate picture to corporations, who face a high turnover of employees.

4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

First, the NGO or YO will start the matching process by creating a profile for its organization. Under the tab For NGOs, NGOs can post a project, whether it be consulting, research, data analysis, or other. YOs can browse projects, each of which has a brief description, and can choose to apply to projects. After choosing applicants, NGOs and YOs will sign a client contract which details the project deliverables, timeframe, and information of primary contacts. Moving onto project management after the matching process ends, both NGOs and YOs will be able to see project progress, including deadlines for each week, work in progress, and staffing details. Then, both parties will complete a survey to review their experience. Upon consent of YOs, performance data will be collected throughout the work process and sent to human resources departments of corporations.

5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Existing matching platform HeySuccess matches youth to opportunities, and 180D.C. creates a network of consulting clubs at schools and is vertically integrated to provide all services for these clubs. Project management competitors like Trello and Asana offer basic services for free and premium services for a monthly subscription fee. Partner 17 combines both services into one platform, and primarily connects NGOs and youth organizations. While there are few organizations that do both or serve the market that we target, we can learn from similar ideas and organizations.

6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

A Partner 17 co-founder also co-founded a youth organization at university, called the Wharton Global Research and Consulting Group (GRC). GRC has worked with clients around the world, creating impact by completing consulting and research projects for NGO clients. Products of projects, including databases, business plans, and marketing strategies, have been implemented by our clients and have improved operational efficiency or have supported them in successfully receiving funding. GRC works on 6 projects with 3 clients per cycle. If 10 GRCs were on Partner 17’s platform, Partner 17 would create positive impact on 60 projects and 30 NGOs, each closer to achieving their visions of resolving a certain issue in the world. Partner 17 intends to support NGOs in achieving their visions at low cost and help youth organizations with sustainable client acquisition and project management.

7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Our next milestone is to finalize the minimal viable product, ask for legal advice on data collection, and onboard youth organizations, NGOs, and companies. We will look for awards, donations, and funding to pay for costs associated with building the MVP and marketing. This fall, we plan to verify and justify our idea by onboarding 2-3 youth organizations and 10-15 NGOs. We will closely monitor and support the matching process, and provide rudimentary project management tools using our current resources. Next spring, we plan to contact 100+ student groups and 100+ NGOs and onboard at least 40% and onboard 10+ companies as clients. We also plan to develop and implement a full project management capacity to our platform.

8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?

We would love to receive technical support, including the development of website and project management tools. Legal support would also be helpful, as we have various questions about the process of data collection and the nature of our organization as a social venture. Finally, we would also like to expand our management team to international locations, and would love advice on leadership and advisory board structure.

9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?

  • Friend support
  • Family support

10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.

We are excited to partner with other changemakers to achieve together. Partner 17 is eager to include changemakers on our platform, where they can post projects and be matched with youth organizations. Whether it be research, consulting, or investment analysis, Partner 17 is excited to connect changemakers to corresponding youth organizations to support both sides in achieving their visions and goals. We are working to find youth organizations with a variety of skillsets from around the world, and are confident that these talented youth can both help and benefit from collaborating with changemakers on projects.
