Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Start-Up (first few activities have happened)

1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."

Hello my name is Nature, I am the Co Founder of the Youth Bar. I recongnized the need for the Project by observing current conditions of youth today. I resonate with this movement because of my own background. I am the eldest sibling of 14 and have been an athlete most my life. As an adult I noticed very quickly that a lot of after school programs were curated around sports. The fact that my siblings, amongst other youth don’t aspire to be athletes and would rather enjoy having a safe space to come to and socialize is what lead my partner and I to come up with this idea. The Youth Bar is a space where youth can come: feel safe, socialize, exercise their mind, and have healthy beverage options to choose from while doing so. This space is not limited to non athletes but all inclusive for the whole entire community.

2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

According to Gretchen Wright, “28 percent of African American and 21 percent of Hispanic children have no adult supervision after the school day ends” ( This is an issue that doesn’t sit well with us. This problem persists because a lot of homes are operating with a single parent. The Youth Bar will be a village to help raise, nurture and support the youth. The Youth Bar is going to assist where parents are falling short!

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

According to Wright, “9 in ten parents (89 percent) are satisfied with the after school program their children attend 8 in ten parents support public funding for after school programs” ( The Youth Bar will offer counseling sessions to students that need it, we’ll also have a very particular staff hand picked by the founders of this space (Nature and Savannah) to help make the environment feel safe and full of love and attention because we know parents fall short here in this area based off personal experiences. We will have security at all times during business hours to assure that the space remains safe!

4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

When a person or group gets involved they will first fill out a contract: This contract includes agreements and details in terms of membership and security with the space. For example, is the parent doing a month to month membership for the scholar or are they signing up for the annual membership? After contracts and membership are paid for the student has all access to the space and resources provided by the Youth Bar. Oh and don’t worry students who were signed up for the month to month membership still have access to counselors and resources if they need it. Students get involved get access, get help, and most of all, get the attention they are lacking at home.

5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Our goal is to partner with an organic beverage brand so our beverage options are healthy choices which makes a difference in encouraging youth to consume healthier options than a corner store has to offer. I noticed, within a mile radius of a lot of high schools/middle schools there was a corner store. The Founders of the Youth Bar want something more reliable and loving to be in walking distance of these young scholars. We will provide more then just a snack and beverage for youth. We will provide a healthy home outside of home where youth don’t have to bare any weight on their own.

6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

Being that we are in the start up stage, our project hasn’t made much of a difference yet. But each time we share the idea for this project we get nothing but positive feedback and reactions! People feel great about this Youth Bar and it doesn’t even exist yet! At our first event we asked for donations to put towards start up money for the Bar and was able to raise funds! It’s a good feeling to have people believe in something so much that they are willing to put their hard earned money into it even though it doesn’t exist yet. It’s a community based project and its also for the youth! Instead of youth hanging out in the neighborhood where they are at risk of being harmed by dangerous Police, they can come hang out at the Youth Bar where its safe and secure!

7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Our project will start in Oakland and not until we are established here is when will maybe think about placing outside of the city. As of right now we know want to have a Youth Bar on the North, East, West, and perhaps even Downtown Oakland. We don’t know who we want to partner with yet but we do know we would like to partner. Research and work still needs to be don’t in this area. We will partner with a company that shares the same core values who will be a complement to the our business.

8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?

We need a board of trustees. We need to build relationships with other business owners so they can potentially become our mentors and/or partners. Right now we need funding to pay for the space, to keep the lights on, pay staff, security, counselor(s) and keep beverages stocked up. So far the support we have are each other, mentors, and each time we pitch the idea we get feedback which also supports us in moving forward with the business. We plan to throw a few mixers for young ambitious folks like the Changemakers so we can come together, pitch our ideas to each other, network, connect, and build. This way teams can be built and connections can be made. More resources and opportunities will present themselves in a space like this.

9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?

  • Donations between $100-$1k

10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.

The Youth Bar will partner with Changemakers who created “Young Black and Everywhere.” Our core values align and their goal to create the platform for youth to be able to travel abroad is perfect. The youth’s engagement with YB&E will allow them to take a step back from their community and give them a wider perspective of what the world looks like and allow them to see what they can do to make a difference like we did!
