Growth (have moved past the very first activities; working towards the next level of expansion)
1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."
We started the animal rights club on Missouri State University campus and the community group Animal Advocates of Springfield. We work together with different animal rescue groups, vegetarian/vegan clubs, and animal activist. We raise awareness through documentaries (Earthlings, Vegucated, What the Health, etc.), tabling events, protesting, social media, and other activities. As Animal Rights Club/Animal Adcovates of Springfield Mo grew the public started reaching out and asking for our help on a variety of animal abuse cases. With over 900 followers now we are wanting to make a change that will have a direct impact on the animals we rescue. Please fill free to view our social media pages to learn more about ARC.
2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
In Willard, there are many farmlands in which they treat cattle like property. By having a sanctuary in Willard, we are able to raise awareness about farm animals and allow students (future farmers) to see animals as the kind, compassionate beings we know they are rather than just “meat”.
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
Our plan is to provide rescued farm animals a forever home where they can be free and live out the rest of their lives. The rescued animals will be saved from various places that include, but are not limited to, factory farms, owners surrendering their animals, or livstock auctions. Our first goal is to create a home-like atmosphere for the animals which include insulated barns, hay, equipment, etc. The rescued animals would be our main focus. After creating a forever home for the animals, we would open our sanctuary to the public to educate the public about the uniqueness of every animal at the sanctuary. We will share stories on how they were rescued and about the personality of the animals. Through these experiences, we are creating a more compassionate world for humans and animals. As of right now the land that we are looking to buy can be found here: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/Tbd-West-Farm-Rd-104-Willard-MO-65781/2098240782_zpid/.
As we begin to grow we will offer fun and engaging activities that will not only educate the public but also help us provide funds for the sanctuary. In the far future.
4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
When we all come together as a community we will be able to educate the public on factory farming and either animal cruelty issues. When they get involved in Animal Rights Club they become a member to help come up with ideas for future events, help at events, volunteer, get involved in public reform, and help out as much or as little as they want to. At the sanctuary we will need the volunteers to socialize with the animals, cleaning up, and help create events for future fundraisers.
5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
The difference in my project is that the location is just 10 minutes away from Springfield, Mo. Most people around here don't care about the welfare of the animals and see them as tools. The nearest sanctuary and vegan restaurant is about 3 hours away. We need direct impact here in Springfield, Mo.
6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
Within over two years we have grown tremendously. We educated the student body and public about animal cruelty issues. We have now over 900 followers on our social media channels and we are wanting to make a direct impact on animals through this sanctuary. One of our posts reached well over a million people!
7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
With my sanctuary, the plan is focus mainly on the animals and then open it up to the public to educate about animal cruelty. The future would have Vegan retreats, fruit/vegetable picking, hay rides, and community events. In the future, there will be cameras hooked up in every barn so you can get a live feed of the animals each day. People will be able to see the sanctuary from all around the world.
8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?
We have an already established club at Missouri State University in which they would volunteer to work on the farm and giving the animals the much-needed attention. The main support we need is sponsorship and funding in order to create a beautiful sanctuary for animals to live out the rest of their lives.
9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?
Donations less than $100
10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.
My family is very supportive of the sanctuary. My sister and I opened up the first ever Animal Rights Club at Missouri State University which became a huge success.
I have created a GoFundMe account where it is posted on social media where friends are sharing https://www.gofundme.com/animal-sanctuary-in-springfield-mo
I am a Student Ambassador for the Humane League and they help provide me with resources and ideas to help promote Animal Rights Club.
