1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."
As you can see in the video - my sister and I started the ARC just two years ago after being inspired by the documentary Earthlings, which depicts the harsh and inhumane treatment of animals for various industries. We decided that we need to do something to stop this, that we needed to make a change. We wrote a constitution to start our university's first ever Animal Rights organization, which has now garnered over 100 members in just two years who actively fight for animals!
2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
We work together to help solve the inhumane treatment of animals. Whether that be domesticated animals like dogs and cats - or the commonly overlooked animals like pigs and cows - we bring a voice to ALL animals as we work together to fight for better treatment. We do this by having unique and creative educational events on campus and showing documentaries, and engaging the community.
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
We start by educating, because most of us grow up going to circuses, wearing leather, eating beef - and don't understand the true implications of it. Therefore our very first step is to educate in the most compassionate and understanding way possible. We reach out to people using Virtual Reality videos and free samples of plant-based alternatives to show them that a change could be possible in their future. Then we provide guidance through social media and weekly meetings to support one another as well as collaborate for future activities. Together, our community grows together and we expand, and now we are in the need to expand further and with your help - we can!
4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
One example of a member who is now very active with us now, is at our Earthlings documentary screening event in March 2017, we serve free plant-based foods (donated directly from the companies) and we show the documentary Earthlings. After the film we host a Q&A session. One of the attendees sitting in the front row admitted that he only came to the event because he heard that there would be free food and that the first 100 people get $5...but then admitted that this documentary was very enlightening and then asked very specific questions about what he can do to help end animal suffering. Now--- fast forward a little over a year-- and this man has been with our organization ever since. At every protest, at every educational event, at every meeting - providing support to other members and educating other people! The people that you would least expect - those are the people we impact!
5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
Since we are the very first Animal Rights organization to not only establish on Missouri State University campus-- but also in Springfield,Mo -- it enlightened me to the fact that there are alot of other organizations out there that can collaborate with eachother on their various concerns or interests-- but its extremely challenging for our Animal Rights organization to collaborate with other AR organizations--- because there is not any around us within a 500 mile radius!! So, being the sole AR organization has taught our members alot about independence, and trust - we work together!
6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
We host over 16 creative events a semester, which means over 30 events a year -- at each event our goal is to reach atleast 200 people -- and we also exceed that. Through out various platforms and unique approaches, we held meaningful discussions with people, provide insight and education about what one can do to help animals, and encourage them to make a change in their life to help be an advocate for animals. We have impacted literally thousands of people-- it's hard to have an exact number since our last event was covered by every news station in the area, and therefore we don't know their exact viewership- but I know we are making a change on our campus-- and our community!
7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
Our next step is to encourage more people to organize and speak up for animals! We would like to see Animal Rights centered organization sprouting in high schools and middle schools, as well as throughout other areas that we have not been able to reach yet. We want Animal welfare to be the topic at every school and community so that we can all work together to help end animal cruelty. We can do this through more funding and experience in developing mobile phone applications to engage people who might not be able to work together with us physically.
8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?
We need a larger platform to reach more people and get more people engaged with fighting for animals. Whether that be through a mobile application or further technology reach - we have the potential (and will power) to make this movement huge!

Currently, with ARC we engage students at the Missouri State University campus and surrounding communities to speak up for animals! We include students from the local high schools and local community colleges as we work together to provide a better life for animals - whether that be through education, physical volunteering, gathering donations, or legal reform.
