Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Idea (hoping to get started in the future)

1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."

We have decided to start creating a change in our community because, in the past few months, there have been many hurricanes and other natural disasters that have affected thousands of people. These events have caused many people to end up with no homes or food, and leaves many who want to help. As middle school students, we want to be able to show that you can help people in need, no matter the age.

2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

The problem that we are trying to solve is the issue involving people who have been affected by natural disasters and can't get help after. The issue of finding financial help after a natural disaster is an issue that many can't afford to pay, in the past few months, Teas has been hit with large hurricanes that have affected many. We want to help the people who are having trouble coming back to a normal lifestyle.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

The way we are wanting to help solve this issue is by raising enough money to continue donating to non-profit organizations that help people who were affected by natural disasters. In order to raise the money, we are planning on creating boxes, in different sizes, each with more items inside like: baked goods, homemade keychains and jewelry. To sell the bundles, we will seek help from our school in order to establish some sales at school. The money gathered will be donated online to non-profit organizations.

4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

If someone were to get involved in our project, they would contribute with the making of the H.U.G.S and would help with sales. In other words, since our organization needs to make money to donate, we would need the help of others to create the gift boxes and then with the help of others, we would be able to make more sells and gain more money to donate. The more help there is, he faster progress can be made, and the faster our organization can complete our goal of providing aid for the multiple people who are suffering from the effects of natural disasters around the nation.

5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Although there are some groups who sell and donate money, we are different because we focus on one specific issue that has began to rise and impact many people in several different ways. While some may focus on poverty, we focus on one of the events that may lead to poverty. By spreading “hugs” we are able to symbolize how contributions of an entire community can spread kindness not only in a town, but in an entire nation that needs assistance. This idea is shown in our project because when people buy H.U.G.S the money gained is used to provide help to people around the nation.

6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

Our project, at this moment, has yet to make a large difference in our community. We are currently making it a priority to perfect our project in order to make it more effective once we begin to sell out boxes and donate money. Once our project begins to make progress, we will make sure to keep it going in order to help the people who need help after being affected by a natural disaster.

7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Letting others know about our organization will allow for more contributions from people around the area. Others are able to contribute greatly simply by buying H.UG.S. Since we have created a website that informs the public about our goals, the next step would be to promote it and publish it so that anyone can see what our organization wants to do. We will then organize everything and pick a date to make sales. The ultimate goal is to raise as much money possible to help those in need. Taking the project to the next level would mean to hold more sales and start advertising the H.U.G.S and most importantly, their purpose.

8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?

Our project needs multiple resources in order to make it fully successful. As I said before, advertisement is very important for our project to be successful. But when it comes to selling the H.U.G.S, good materials are needed to create the items that will be sold in the boxes. The better these materials are, the faster sales can be made. In order to reach the ultimate goal of this project, all we would need is well made materials to create what we need to sell, good, appealing HUGS boxes, along with enough supplies and multiple ways to get the word out about what the main goal is. If these things are able to be done in a fast and effective manner, our project would be extremely successful.

9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?

  • Friend support
  • Family support

10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.

Ways that we could include people of similar interest, and younger people is by allowing them help out with the sales. The sales for our project is very important as it is how we will be able to raise money in order to donate, which by allowing others to help, give them a better understanding on how we operate. Giving them an opportunity to work along with us, could inspire them to continue to work with us, or to go on their own and make a difference in their communities.

Great idea! It's so important to help fellow members of your community during hardships. I've noticed the idea originated in August of 2017. How far have you come since then in achieving your goal of making the H.U.G.S. boxes? Have you considered asking for community donations of materials to create the boxes - this might yield more/better contributions rather than asking for money for materials.
