Why Schools Should Offer Home Economics

1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."

I am stepping up to make change because practical skills such as cooking, cleaning, sewing, interior design, and personal finance are vital to independence. These are skills students will use through out their lives and can lead to jobs in hospitals, restaurants, hotels, and even government.

2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

More and more young adults are becoming "boomerang kids". A "boomerang kid" is a child who leaves home but then returns to live with their parents because they lack the life skills to be independent. A recent CNN article states, "college administrators describe students who can't do anything without calling their parents. Employers worry that more young employees lack the ability to work independently." Students are lacking the needed skills.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

Starting with my own school, I would like to make sure all schools offer Home Economics. My school actually already has a Home Economics classroom with all of the equipment. They also have a teacher who is interested in teaching the class. But the school has said that the budget is just not available to fund the class. I feel as though if the school administrators knew the value of the class, they would find the money. I am starting my campaign my raising awareness and presenting my idea to the school administrators. With the support of friends, family, and my mentor Mrs. Lewis I hope to convince the school to add Home Economics to my school.

4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

Since I am in the beginning stages I will need help from a lot of people of all ages. I will need help making signs, banners, bumper stickers; collecting signatures; supporting me as I speak with the school administration and school board; and possibly raising money.

5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

My idea is unique because it encourages independence and will positively effect this generation and the next as they have families of their own.

6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

So far, there are many adults I have talked to that have shared positive experiences from taking a Home Economics class when they were in school. There is also a lot of interest and excitement from students who eagerly want to learn these important life skills.

7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

The next step is to present my idea to the school administration and school board.

8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?

I think ultimately it will come down to the school having the money to pay a teacher to hold the class and materials for the classroom (i.e. fabric, food, books, etc.).

10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.

Once the class is up and running, the use of technology in the classroom would be ideal. Using programs like Quickbooks to learn personal finance. There might be other ways technology can be used to teach life skills. Another changemaker might have valuable ideas to enhance this class.
