1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."
My name is Naomie Pierre-Louis , I am the owner of Madame Royalty and Madame’s Royal Heart. Today I am stepping up to catalyze change within the child welfare system. I am determined to advance despite adversity and part of my mission is to motivate others to do so a well. As an atypical product of the child welfare system, I stand today as an inspiration to those who are currently walking down a path very similar to mine. I am advocating for change for three main reasons.
One: The child welfare system has been failing our youth for years.
Two: Youth deserve to be heard and have an input on what happens in their lives.
Everyone deserves the right to be in control of their destiny.
And Three: The system needs collaborative unity so youth can feel supported and become successful.
Together we can make a youth’s world change for the better.
2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
Youth in care who advocate for themselves are often turned into black sheep. The policies in place for youth who are aging out has been failing for years. If a youth pursues a four year degree, they age out around the start of their senior year which causes a financial burden and distractions from their studies. . A lot of youth that age out from care end up homeless, deceased or down paths of poverty.
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
Reforming the system will take a lot of community support. We will have power in numbers. These issues can be alleviated by bringing awareness to the mission, getting support and donations from people who will be willing to help the mission, getting a petition started and signed as well as bringing it to local government leaders. Getting mentors as well as leaders from different universities to make personal connections and communicate how life changing college can be.
4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
A lot of people struggle when creating charities because people do not know if you are credible. To alleviate this issue,I make sure you receive a product. A lot of people don't even know that their purchase pays forward, they buy products from me to support my brand or because they like what I sell.
I started donating a portion of each sale from my business to the “ Royal Piggy Bank”. I created the royal piggy bank to put aside funds for youth events that I started doing. It was a great way to have contributions made without having to ask people to donate. This is how easy it is to help move the Mission of Madame's Royal Heart.
5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
Social workers from my city will tell you themselves that the child welfare system is flawed and failing. I haven't seen any of them step up to make a change in the structure that has been putting them out of jobs for years because it has become so difficult for all parties involved. However my approach is different because I am advocating for a change in the structure of the system, and trying to do motivational work to convince youth to take the path that has less footsteps in addition to getting them to see how much opportunity lies ahead of them. I have key insight and personal experience.
6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
The best memory of impact so far has been when we hosted a Christmas party for youth in care who were temporarily at a homeless shelter. This touched my heart because they were already in the system and couldn't be placed in homes. I used some of my college refund to buy gifts for them and gave them a motivational speech about why and how going away to a four year university could change their lives. I had a lot of positive feedback from the youth and received lots of hugs and thanks. I felt so empowered knowing the youth there were grateful for my outreach. The next year I started Madame Royalty and decided to revamp A Heart Unforgotten as well once I realized I could easily incorporate the mission into my sales.
7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
Here are the ideas to take Madame's Royal Heart to the next level.
Get board extension extended so children who are wards of the state and attend Four year universities are not aging out right before their senior year and hit with financial hardship and curve balls that may ultimately cause them to drop out. I have been researching it and would like to start a petition to gain support and prove that others feel like this is a flaw in the system that needs to be fixed.
Have personal small group college tours to universities that will motivate children in care to peruse four year degrees rather than aging out to nothing but the “streets”.
Get Unisex T-shirts made that specifically represent Madame's Royal Heart to help raise funds.
8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?
To expand my vision of Madame's Royal Heart, there are a few resources I need.
I need training on how to get local leaders involved. I need to find a resource to help me take small groups of youth to personal college tours. I need a way to reach a lot of people that will be willing to sign the petition for the board extension reform. I need volunteers. I need lessons on how to become a better saleswoman for the people who support Madame's Royal Heart by purchasing from Madame Royalty.
9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?
10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.
I've seen a few other change makers who want to impact the lives of youth within their community. We could all partner together to share each other's missions via our social media channels and personal connections . Those of us who live close enough to each other could even partner together for each other's missions by helping to execute events and bring helping hands to one another's cause. Other young people can get involved as leaders making a difference by sharing the cause on social media, volunteering or even something so simple as making recommendations for good universities and things that helped them in college. One of the most important things young leaders can do is share their story, be a positive role model and pave the way for youth coming up under them.
