Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.
Idea (hoping to get started in the future)
1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."
We decided to make this change because we feel that our hometown is extremely underrepresented as far as opportunities for advancing in education. Through a few private mentors that we were lucky to have, we were able to learn business etiquette and were also given an opportunity to learn about applying for college. A few members of our group are first generation college students, so these opportunities weren't something that we had the chance to take our time and meditate on.
2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
After talking to teachers at our previous high school we learned that many of the seniors did not feel the need to apply to college due to struggle with their academic performance. It is with high hopes that this challenge will provide students with a positive activity in which they can focus on and remain involved in all year round. We believe the outcome will result in an increase in motivation for higher education.
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
We are hoping to help high school students become more aware of issues pertaining to their community, brainstorm ideas to help their assigned social issue, learn the importance of collaborative teamwork, along with why going to college is both crucial and beneficial for their future. Some of the things we hope to implement are as follows
High School (juniors and seniors) (Primary)
Helping financial state going into college
Promoting the importance of higher learning/education
Create a challenge for high school students
Demonstrate the importance of business etiquette, presentations, networking, etc.
4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
A group of seniors will embark on a challenge that will challenge them in stepping outside of their comfort zone. They will be expected to bring awareness to issues within their community, and propose possible solutions to help fix these issues as a team. The challenge will involve researching, networking, and presenting the information they find on their social issue in a professional setting for their senior project
5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
We plan to have our project centered in low income communities. Though this programs motive has been attempted before, we offer an interactive experience with high school students instead of the traditional lecture that students receive.
6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
The program is still in stages of development and therefore our focus so far has been on engagement with our target audience. Through our platform at our respective college campus’, we have been given the opportunity to be mentors to young high school students through programs such as the Male Minority Mentoring program. Heading into the future we plan to see our impact by surveys and general word of mouth.
7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
The project has the potential to create a program where local college students would be able to volunteer, mentor, and guide students through the process. Having mentors that are currently doing what it is they are trying to do, and who are close enough in age that there is no social gap will help encourage students.
8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?
Support team from local colleges: We will need contact with the college admissions offices to better help spread the information to students for college requirements.
A website: We need a website that will have the purpose, schedule, college resources, live stream footage
9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?
Help Us Support Diversity! Part 1 [optional] Which of the following categories do you identify with?
Black or African American (for example: African American, Jamaican, Haitian, Nigerian, Ethiopian, Somalian, etc) (8)
