Replenishing The Butterflies
With the dwindling butterfly population, our goal is to replenish the butterflies and educate the community on how they can also help.
Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.
Idea (hoping to get started in the future)
1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."
2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
The population of butterflies is rapidly declining due to climate change and habitat loss. Butterflies are major pollinators right next to bees and very few people are aware of their importance to the ecosystem and the food chain. Without these major pollinators, our producing plants are at risk of no longer producing. They play such an important role in the ecosystem, if they go extinct, the echo will be heard throughout.
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
I plan on solving this problem by having a large butterfly enclosure and garden. I will grow butterflies and release them to the wild while growing a garden that helps promote the native butterflies by having their corresponding plants. I will start a program through my Parks&Rec district, that allows families that sign up to attend on a date landing on every other Sunday evening. I will use this time to teach the attendees about the native butterfly species, their corresponding plants, why they're endangered, and how the can help by being more enviromentally conscious. I will also create little clay balls filled with seeds that help promote butterflies, called "Butterfly Balls". These will be available to purchase and the proceeds will go back to my foundation.
During "off seasons" I'd like to partner with local schools and set up assemblies created to engage the youth and bring awareness to butterflies, their importance, and how they can help with environmental preservation.
4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
By signing up to attend my program, attendees will be able to sit in my butterfly enclosure to get a hands on experience where they will also be able to plant their very own seeds that they can take home to help promote the pollinators. While they immerse themselves in the topic through hands on activities, I take the time to educate them on native species, their importance, why they're endangered, and how they can help preserve the species by being more environmentally conscientious. At the end of the program, they'll have the opportunity to purchase a bag of "Butterfly Balls" to support pollinators in their own homes. This will help youth and adults become more aware of the impact that small organisms have on us. It will introduce new ideas in a fun way to youth and it will give them the inspiration to be more passionate about butterflies and habitat preservation.
5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
Replenishing The Butterflies focuses on a species of pollinators that is constantly overshadowed by other pollinators (bees), even though they are just as close to the verge of endangerment and extinction.
I educate people through my own home and backyard, providing a personal experience where attendees will be able to get "up close and personal" with my true passion, engaging them in a personal way that larger organizations cannot.
6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
Not only will my project help replenish the butterfly population, it will help rebuild their habitats, and it will engage my community. It will inspire, motivate, and educate people on the importance of environmental preservation. As a result, we work together as a community to reduce waste, and make our environment a safer and healthier place to live.
7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
I plan on partnering with local schools, my Parks&Rec district, and eventually local businesses for sponsorships. I plan on building the butterfly sanctuary, and I plan on advertising my foundation.
8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?
I currently need funding so that I am able to acquire materials to build my butterfly enclosure, grow my garden, and build my website. I am in need of an adviser, and eventually I need to team with local schools and my Parks&Rec District.
I currently have family support, friend support, a space for all of this, and the general plan for my project.
9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?
10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.
I am currently working with my partner in crime to creating this foundation, who is also a youth leader. I would love to partner with other youth leaders for new ideas and new approaches to different problems. I would also like to partner with other youth leaders in order to inspire youth to step up and make changes in their own communities.
