Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.
Start-Up (first few activities have happened)
1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."
Initially, we started this project being very fond of the idea of making a difference, then we finally realized how difficult it can be to make even a small impact on society. It’s not easy making a difference, so it takes a lot of effort to achieve what we target. Our teacher strongly inspired how much this could affect this in a way of volunteering, and it motivated us to be able to interact with many topic that deserve change. Since we ourselves are teens, we feel like our interests will connect more with kids our age and it will encourage them to volunteer more.
2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
The problem that teens aren’t very involved in their community, and it loses its focus on keeping us all united. Kids want to live their childhood to the fullest, and even our kids these days worry that they aren’t having fun experiences anymore. We’re losing our opportunities to be kids and go out and do something. It creates an anti-social environment. We want to fix this problem, and get kids back into making a change while still having fun.
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
Strengthen community services. Holding events such as; Beach clean-ups, Help the homeless/homeless shelters, volunteer at animal shelters, volunteering for kids/adults in need. We haven’t tried this out just yet, and we want to start exactly that. Our problem should be solved in a way that most kids will connect, and be interested in helping out because of their similar interests.
4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
The person gets opportunities to go out with us and volunteer at different facilities/organizations and they get to invest time and work into a cause that matters to them, they are also subscribed to our newsletter and will be notified updates. These updates will show our next events, and volunteering members will have a choice to join the event and help out.
5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
We focus on volunteering and making volunteering fun by giving teens an opportunity to use their voice in what our community needs and what needs to be changed.
6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
We’ve made a lot of mistakes, yet it grew our organization to be better than ever.
At first, we started out as a normal school project we didn’t really want to be involved in, yet we launched our organization at Oceanside Harbor as a Beach Launch Party. From door to door, we announced to students what we were doing and they became extremely interested. Before the day of the event, we had to reschedule because of group members not being able to go.
In total, a few people had came to the new date, but unfortunately, not many people- who said they would come- had arrived. What went wrong was that not many people were targeted and lots of people forgot, or it was inconvenient to go to the harbor.
As for now, we are in the process of starting our events; Hopefully, our ideas will take us to more unique events that could get more people interested.
7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
We want to create a program where we work in different high schools in San Diego and provide volunteering hours for teens who are interested in joining and making a difference.
8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?
We need things like funding, school sponsorships, transportation, an easy-access space/room where we can have our meetings.
9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?
Donations less than $100
10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.
To start, we’ve been connecting with our family members and friends as well, but we haven’t fully partnered with much organizations as of yet. We want to partner with other teen programs such as YMCA, Boys and Girls clubs, etcetera. As of the start of our organization, we have approached Ivey Ranch Camp to partner with their program. Their program helps give teens with disabilities free rides on horses, and we got to help make a model of a lever for the kids to play with. It works perfectly!
On May 15th, we went to Ivey Ranch and installed our model, you will be able to see the progress we’ve made in Personal Journey. In the future, we want to partner with more organizations and spread the word to a larger audience.
