Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Start-Up (first few activities have happened)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

Worldwide, water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of the global population and is projected to rise. Every day, 1,000 children die of a preventable water-related disease. Over the last decade, Puerto Rico has been suffering with water sanitation problems. More than 75% of our water sources does not comply with the regulatory agencies standards. Clean water is important to have healthy communities, economic prosperity and a safe environment.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

Remora is a project that integrates water filtering, water quality monitoring and bacterial management into one system alongside an education program to provide communities access to clean water preparing them to live a sustainable life. Remora is an affordable water filtration device that allows communities to take immediate action when it comes to cleaning their water sources while also creating awareness about the water sources surrounding us having sustainability as our core. The Remora machine is a unique system in Puerto Rico created and directed by students capable of working in every water sources and capable of filtering 12 millions gallons of water yearly per machine, 3,000 pounds of microplastics yearly per machine and reduce communities clean water related costs by 70%. This device allows communities to become independent of outside-aid, allows government and organizations to get a snapshot of water quality.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

After Hurricane Maria destroyed Puerto Rico in September 2017, I saw the need for clean water in my family and neighbors. We were not ready in my community to tackle the issue of not having tap water running in our houses and when we wanted to use the water in our near river, we found out it was polluted due to the bad practices of our neighborhood. In the following weeks, I started seeing news about other communities in worst conditions than mine so I decided to gather a group of friends to visit these communities and design a machine to tackle the water crisis.

4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

Our project is divided in three phases: portable water filters, educational program and the Remora machine. We have implemented the first two phases in Corozal and Humacao. In Corozal, Jessica Ocasio is our community leader. She led the community to reduce the use of plastic in the community to avoid them to end in their near river and the plastic used was transformed into pots for harvest. While in Humacao, Janet Rodriguez is our community leader. She coordinated over 10 workshops with us about clean water and sanitation to help improve their community's main source of income: fishing.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Our project is unique because it merges water filtering, water quality monitoring and bacterial management into one system alongside an educational program. Projects in other countries only works with trash, water quality, water filtering o bacterial management separately, never together. The innovation of our project is putting all of those together with a educational program to help the project succeed.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

Since the start of this year, we have dedicated 10,920 hours to our project spent between development of the project, educational program and professional development for our members and communities. Established in two communities, we have impacted over 2,800 individuals improving their access to safe and affordable drinking and clean water. With our educational program, we estimate 129,600 water liters conserved through water use efficiency and created two economic activities in the communities. In the environmental side, we achieved reducing e-coli hives by 25%, normalized PH levels in Humacao and replicated our model.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

For the implementation of the machine, our next step, we are currently developing a partnership with Coca-Cola and Ford to sponsor the first two machines that will be implemented in Humacao and Corozal. Also, we just got selected to participate in the Startup.pr pre-acceleration program to help us scale our project and make it a reality.
