Date You Started Your Project Started

September/ 25/2019

Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Idea (hoping to get started in the future)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

According to the FBI, in 2018 there were 424,066 NCIC (National Crime Information Center) entries for missing children. The numbers are really alarming! I cannot imagine a day without my mom and dad. Just the thought of these kids taken away, their dreams trampled brings chills to my spine. Technology is advancing and we are thinking of sending a man to Mars, I think it high time we use it to save the most vulnerable.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

My device is a true changemaker. I feel confident that we can reach people in danger and in need of help a lot faster. I want to make a device that is affordable and easy to carry. It can be a pendant that looks aesthetically pleasing, camouflaging its actual purpose. It can send the exact GPS location and could be voice-activated. One can program a code word of their liking for its activation, just like we say "OK Google". Upon activation, the device 1} captures a picture of the surrounding 2}connects to 911 3}alerts the family 4} send an SOS with GPS location 5} starts recording a short video/ audio. Imagine the possibilities of such a device!

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

I am almost 14 years old, a freshman in high school, but I have never walked alone to my school. My middle school was about 5 minutes walking distance from my home, but my parents always walked with me. Overbearing, overprotective, tiger mom? – no my parents were not any of these. They were just traumatized people. On February 13, 2009, Escondido, CA a 14-year-old girl Amber Dubois went missing while going to school. My parents were involved in her search and were hoping and praying for her safe return. It hit them hard as they had a 4-year-old daughter too. A year later, Chelsea King went missing not far away from our neighborhood. She too was a high school senior who went jogging. In her case, her body was found within days. The man who had perpetrated the crime led the officers to the location of Amber’s body a year later. It devasted my parents. To this day, I see the fear in them.

4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

Since we are just starting this project, we can use all the help we can get to make it a success. Regardless of the background, we can use your skills and help in technology, management, marketing, and sales. If you can provide seed money and other financial assistance towards this project, that would be hugely beneficial as well. When a person/group gets involved in this project, they are part of what we would like to call “The success team”. As part of the success team, each one is responsible to help the others and do what it takes to get the project into high gear. Your inputs, ideas & contribution toward the betterment & success of the project are extremely important and will be cherished and you are successful partners in the success story. If you choose to provide us with financial help, we will work with you to provide you a handsome return on your investment.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

We have many variations of these devices in various capacities including mobile apps. However, mobile apps will require data plans and signals to be available and they are bulky. What this one proposes is the device itself to be extremely small in the guise of an ornament and utilizes GPS tracking when it is voice-activated or touch-enabled. Rest of the magic happens in the cloud and backend to call 911 or other communication mechanism required. There are emergency medical devices available today similar to a pendant, however those need to have a base unit that will within a small radius.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

I feel this will the most full filling part of the project. For the users of the device. whose lives got saved by it when they write their experiences. The 911 data of how many times they used and received data of the exact GPS location from our device. Above all a page dedicated to users who can give their experiences. Through these reviews, we also hope to keep making the product better by incorporating what the users want.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Making it available widely at low cost.

9. Which of the following types of expertise would be most useful for you?

  • Legal Services

10. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?

  • Family support
  • Donations less than $100

How did you hear about this challenge?

  • Ashoka page or contact

Referral: If you discovered the Challenge thanks to an organization or person other than Ashoka or T-Mobile, who was it?

It was Ashoka through North-South Foundation

I really liked this idea, wish you good luck. Hope to see it on the market soon!
When Nirbhaya happened in my city we were shattered. I feel a device like this would save so many.
Your idea of not keeping an incurring cost is also great.
