1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
Trying to unify our school more, especially in the African American population.
2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
I want to gather and encourage African Americans more into doing things that will build the connectivity between all of us and help others.
3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?
As my school years continue, I have noticed a problem in our school environment. Of course the school is heavily populated with different ethnicities; however, I see a division in the population of African Americans. For example, Chapel Hill High School, as I mentioned before, consist of many ethnicities, such as Latinos, Caucasians, and lastly African Americans. Most of the time, if you see a Latino in the school, he or she is followed by another Latino and another, like a unit. This is the same for Caucasians, as he or she is also combined as a unit. They all encourage each other and have friendly competitions with each other, academically and in sports. Meanwhile, African Americans have less unity and tend to be all over the place. Some are grouped in a unit like matter, but usually, it is because of bad behavior or “street credit.”
5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
I'm in between the start-up and idea-stage because I get more ideas as I go, but I felt good from hearing someone else talking about it. For example, I overheard one of the girls at my saying that its a great idea to voice the club more to others. Also, more people are coming and asking what do they have to do to help.
6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
I am trying to really reach African Americans in a way because of our diversion in the school. Also, I feel like it is different from what another would do because of me not sugar coding anything, but basically stating we need to do better.
7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
More people will talk about it at school.
8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
Hopefully, my project will grow big enough to where it will influence other Douglas County Schools.
