1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

50% of mental health problems are established by age 14 and mental illness occurs in different environments. Though people exhibit similar symptoms, each situation is different. Kids are prone to developing mental illness in school, sports teams, and at home. Our app is trying to solve this problem by focusing on the importance of mental health prevention in youth and helping youth develop the skills to manage and succeed with their own tools.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

Introducing our app DiscoverMe. While researching the mental wellness problem, we decided the best way to tackle the problem was through an app. DiscoverME helps youth discover one's inner self which is uniquely different from other apps. The app teaches young kids that it is not only normal, but also healthy to explore and express their feelings. Our app’s kid-friendly interface includes habit trackers which tracks quality of sleep, food intake, moods, and drug/alcohol use. It also includes a journal, a safe space for users to talk about their feelings. These features make it easier for users to organize their thoughts by color coding for easier interpretation. Also, through an archive, users can save their entries. Our app also includes side features including grounding games, music or meditation choices with the intent of calming down. All these resources are common techniques used by therapists. We also include resources, that can be scaled locally, for professional help if users notice they have been having consistently bad days. DiscoverME does not diagnose users, but simply shows trends in users’ mental wellness journey. We hope to foster tools for a healthy mindset in kids.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

We came up with the idea of a mental health app not only based on our experience, but also through the experience of others around us. We stress the importance of attention to proper mental health for everybody, including youth, about 1 in 6 experience mental health issues. Even though our community has mental health awareness clubs and mental health units in our local Olmsted Youth Commission, there hasn't been a voice to actually advocate for the problem. Mental illness is a difficult and risky subject; instead of avoiding the risks, we've chosen to be the catalysts for change. We understand the nature of mental illness and the need for change, which allows us to believe we can circumvent the risks together. Through our app we believe we can create a way for youth to be expressive, be strong, and most importantly, be themselves.

If a person is having a busy, stressful day, they may briefly use our app's grounding or meditation features in the middle of the day to center themselves. At the end of the day, they can take more time to fully write about their thoughts in the journal feature, and they can log the day's mood. If they look at the past month's trends and notice they have been stressed most days, they can utilize our resources section to seek help.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

We have researched possible competitors of our app and have found that our competitors' apps only have one or two of the following features: journaling, lifestyle trackers, meditation, and music. But With DiscoverMe all of these essential features are easily accessible in one area. DiscoverMe also improves upon the main functions of other apps to be more interactive and Kid - friendly. For example With our journaling feature, we included “reaction” so youth can express their feelings. We also added a feature to make it easier to find resources to get help, even at a local level.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

Before we even started our project we sent out a survey around our school about how our app and its features can help those at school. Over 80% of students surveyed said they felt a need and want for our app and its features. Our app is also currently in the proto-type phase, and we are currently hearing plenty of constructive criticism and positive feedback. We also are in the process of communicating with our local school district to implement our app into their schools, and have heard positive feedback for our work. We are excited to continue developing our app, adjusting to comments and feedback, so that we can help foster a community of positivity about the need for proper mental health skills in the youth. To add, our solution to this issue is an app made by youth for youth.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

We of course still have our future in mind, and this is our plan. We have already contacted Consultants in Psychological Health and discussed how this app could be used in future therapy sessions. We will also finish communication with the Rochester school board, churches, and hospitals and insurance companies.We plan to release 2.0 version of “DiscoverMe” and create a premiuim version of our app and expand from the Google Play Store to iOS. We also hope to expand our app to all of MN and later on to the Midwest region, and eventually the entire US. We plan to use the money towards working to design our app to fit contemporary standards, and to expand our marketing.
