Date You Started Your Project Started

2019

Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Idea (hoping to get started in the future)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

There are several problems that Apptivist would solve: 1. No easy access or understanding of bills being presented 2. Illegitimate news sources on social media lead to inaccurate polling 3. Outdated system of letters and emails predominate the legislator office scene 4. Data analytics is being used to target citizens with ads through their social apps 5. The voices of the people are not being heard...

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

By creating the Apptivist platform, users will be given bite-sized summaries of bills that they can read through and swipe right or left to agree or disagree on. Our proposed system revolutionizes the already used tally system (without changing it) by modernizing it and making information accessible to the modern day citizen and consumer. Apptivist will make polling accessible to all and will eliminate biased polls from partisan institutions. By creating the app and having registered users, Apptivist will be able to demarcate itself from other social platforms as the trusted, nonpartisan platform dedicated towards serving the people. We will not target users with ads nor will we enable illegitimate news sources.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

I went to my first civil rights rally when I was a toddler in a stroller. As a Muslim and a minority, I have always sought to ensure that my voice mattered and made a difference. In 2016 after the election, it felt like all of my nonprofit work was for nothing. This was due in part towards the lack of accountability within the technology being used today. Cambridge Analytica and other institutions further the divide between people on a daily basis. The need for a platform that buttresses the American Dream and the work of the people has never been more crucial.

4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

Once a person downloads the app, they are prompted to create an account and are given a unique identifier which they use to log into the app. The identifier will be crucial as it will prevent individuals from creating multiple accounts to engage with the app. Once the account is made, based on their district and locale, users will be prompted to engage with bite-sized summaries of various different bills that are currently being presented on legislative floors whether at the town, district, county, state, and federal level. Bills will also be displayed with their progression on the floor and an info button will give the user a link to read the whole bill if they so please. Once users swipe respective bills (swipe right to vote yes and left to vote no), these votes are packaged based on the respective legislative level and sent to their elected representatives.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Currently, Congressional offices have the option of using just 10 authorized constituent relationship management systems. These systems are outdated and unintuitive. Our idea not only bridges the gap between lawmakers and constituents but it further revolutionizes the current system of ONLY (e)mail and calls. By this simple form of digi-voting, constituents can allow their voices to be heard with just a swipe of the finger rather than spending hours making calls or sending mail or email.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

During election cycles, issues are always more hotly debated and discussed. The way we would aim to make a difference is by taking advantage of the election cycle and by mass-marketing campaigns, we can build our followership by providing info at the federal level. As we expand our reach and resources, we would then be able to add state-level functionalities and even more specific locale levels. The potential of this app is astronomical and the positive impact it can have on the social consciousness within a democracy is huge.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Since our project is only an idea, the next stage would be to acquire funding and build out a fully functioning application that can be used after 6 months in addition to acquiring a patent on our technology. As we build out the application, we can work on developing partnerships with non-partisan institutions. The potential for the idea is such that there can be so many applications of it which we hope can evolve organically based on the needs that exist and the opportunities that arise (such as becoming an in app functionality on already widely used social networking apps)

10. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?

  • Friend support
  • Mentors/advisors

How did you hear about this challenge?

  • T-Mobile page or contact

Referral: If you discovered the Challenge thanks to an organization or person other than Ashoka or T-Mobile, who was it?

This sounds like a fantastic idea Abdullah Baig ! I think it is very crucial that the government is able to reach more people at a much faster rate. I also think that it is extremely important that congressional offices can reach individuals more than just calling or emailing. As the world progresses technologically, humanity is strongly concentrating on social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. It would be great you could revolve your system around these entities which will allow us to reach a younger but much more diverse demographic. Our generation tends to be the hardest to reach and we don’t tend to have the highest voting turnout which affects many of our policies that get passed and officials who get elected. So I love this idea and being able to reach a younger demographic will allow us to have a much more informed and influential youth of the United States of America! We should definitely talk more, I’m interested in what we could do! Check out our project U Decide  on tackling corruption and political instability in 3rd world countries by designing an app that brings political literacy at the tap of a finger while breaking down financial and language barriers!
