Date You Started Your Project Started

Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Idea (hoping to get started in the future)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

Since Hurricane María we've discover a lot of needy communities and NPO in Puerto Rico that need volunteers. Also we've seen how a lot of puertorricans want to help, but don't know how, where, when or what are the needs. There is no platform or entity that links volunteers with NPO or that promotes volunteering. Therefore, finding volunteers and finding where to volunteer can be difficult.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

We want to solve the problem by developing an mobile App.This app aims to link the needy, NPO and volunteers. But also we want to encourage volunteering and create a culture of volunteering.Organizations and volunteers will create a profile where organizations can publish their activities and recruit volunteers. In the app the volunteers have the opportunity to track and accumulate their hours of service. To encourage volunteering we want to partner with local business to turn their volunteer hours to rewards. This rewards can be such as discounts, offers, meal among others. This will help the small and local business of Puerto Rico by giving them more exposure and promote local consuming. This app is a win/win situation to everyone involved. It will help NPO and communities to recruit volunteers and express the needs. Gives the opportunity to volunteers to find places to help, keep track of service hours, and turn them to rewards. It will also boost small business and local consuming in Puerto Rico. An app like this helps NPO reach a bigger audience and be able to make a greater impact while boosting local economy.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

We have always been involved in volunteering activities since we were kids. Certainly an event that opened our eyes was Hurricane María two years ago. It showed us the importance of the third sector and volunteer work to help all the communities in need. How all of them united can help restructuring an Island. We have been part of a lot of volunteering projects in Puerto Rico like “Como Otro Yo” and “Juventud Solidaria” and we’ve suffered not finding volunteers or not knowing the needs of communities and all the NPO that need help. Therefore, we want to create a volunteer ecosystem and culture. We wish to make it easier for people to volunteer and express their needs. We believe in the power of volunteer work. It has helped us grow and gain a mindset of giving and together building better communities.

4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

When an organization create a profile, they can share activities to recruit a bigger audience of volunteers. Volunteers with profiles can search for activities where they can register. Then volunteers go to the activity, and accumulates the hours that the organization certifies. Organization will have QR codes with the quantity of hours that the activity takes. Volunteers will scan the code through the app to earn the hours. With the hours, the volunteer could redeem them in one of the participant local business. For example, an organization publishes on the app they need of 10 tutors for a low-income school. All the volunteers get the notification of the recruitment and 10 qualified decide to sign up. The tutoring sections last 2 hrs, volunteers will scan a 2hr QR code from the organizer for each tutoring section. Potentially with 2hrs of service the volunteer can redeem a free lunch.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Right now in Puerto Rico we lack of any platform similar to this one. The only thing available is a database of all the non profit organization in Puerto Rico and a brief description of what they do and contact. This could help us in the process of adding as much organizations as we can to the app. But such database do not connect directly the organizations and volunteers. Which is something that the app will do. Although in the USA there is some apps to promote and track volunteers, none of these apps includes or works in Puerto Rico. Even if they did our project has a different approach.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

We plan to know if we are making a difference in the communities and non profit organizations, by measuring the quantity of people that start creating profiles and registering to the activities. If a lot of people create profiles, that will equals a bigger amount of volunteer work getting done which equals more communities being impacted.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Once we have the app develop, we will start a campaign to share the app with the non- profit organizations and communities in need. We will go to schools and colleges to share the app with young active students and show the benefits they can get by volunteering. We will partner with all the local business we can, to give more advertising to local consuming to the volunteers. Also we plan to offer help to all the non-profit organizations to register properly in the app. After this takes off we would love to create a better ecosystem for non-profit organization and social enterprise in Puerto Rico.
