Class to Class

This is a platform that serves as an "eBay" for teachers; they will be connected to one another to see what school supplies they can trade.

Date You Started Your Project Started

Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Idea (hoping to get started in the future)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

Despite living in Silicon Valley, teachers still struggle with obtaining all the supplies they need. I grew up under the public school system and can remember my teachers nearly crying due to the lack of support from the district. Many, especially in my younger years, were spending hundreds of dollars from their own pocket for our education. Poorer districts have it worse and this lack of investment and attention given to teachers is dire.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

I am working on a website called "Class to Class". Craigslist and eBay are both resources that teachers often utilize to get supplies they need and teachers also use Facebook groups to be able to trade/swap supplies with each other. However, there are many problems to this. The first problem is that Craigslist and eBay are not always the most trustworthy sites and can even be dangerously unpredictable at times. The second problem is that not every teacher uses social media sites so they may not be able to network to trade supplies. Thus, Class to Class's community will consist of teachers who apply first. They will be verified through a form where simple questions such as "what grade do you teach, what school, what subject?" can be used to screen applicants. This information can all be checked online. Then, to access the listings page of supplies on the site, teachers who are accepted will use the code emailed them to enter. Thus, teachers can see the listings and each other's contact information in the listings and feel safe in the fact that every member is a teacher and not a predator. Teachers can arrange to meet in public exchange events or trade with each other privately.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

The public school system is amazing but is imperfect. I remember my teachers being frustrated with not being able to give us the materials that we or special-needs students needed because of the lack of money. My call to action appeared in seventh grade. I had a life-changing experience. Previously, my math grades were not the ones I wanted. At best, I would get a D on tests. However, my seventh grade math teacher brought me up from a C on my report card to an A. I realized that with all the funding problems in even a considerably wealthier area, teachers still struggled. In the future, there may not be teachers who transform students anymore. Who would want to enter this profession if they get no support? I am concerned, especially with how poverty is worsening and the national debt is increasing. I want to help make sure future students can meet teachers who change lives.

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

A Class to Class teacher will not only get more supplies, but they will meet a community of teachers to learn from. Class to Class is not just a space for supplies to be traded, it is a place for old peanut butter jars to be recycled (peanut butter jars can be used as pencil cups, for example) and old desk chairs to find a new owner. Teachers will be able to bond with each other as not only will Class to Class hold exchange meets, but they will also hold arts-and-crafts meets if teachers do not know what to do with the random supply they find. A teacher will no longer have to dip into their own pockets to be able to help their kids. Indirectly, a student will be involved. Perhaps they "can't do math", or English is their second language. But because teachers teachers can obtain the supplies they need, perhaps the student will find that they are well-supported in their learning.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

The difference between Class to Class and other programs already out there is that teachers will be reaching out to each other directly; there will not be a physical location for this place such as the Baltimore Teacher Supply Swap. Other solutions require going to an actual store and being disappointed when the supplies have unfortunately already run out; the inventory is bare. However, since Class to Class takes place completely online, teachers can avoid this and can just reach out to each other. This also results in greater convenience and the possibility of a national network.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

My project is still at the idea-stage because I did not learn coding until July at Kode with Klossy so I am still in the process of doing so. I am also still in the process of reaching out to teachers, the teacher union, and the school district to see if I will be allowed to send a district-wide email. I know I will be making a difference when I start to see the applications for teachers who want to become Class to Class members soar, and the number of listings on the site increase every single day. I am excited for seeing maybe one or two listings on the site at first (my own extra supplies I can contribute) and then watching as they multiply exponentially as more teachers hear about it and would like to join. I will be keeping track of the approximate financial value of the supplies that are traded to be able to apply for grants as a nonprofit organization to better support teachers.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

My idea for taking my project to the next level would be hosting the exchange meets for supplies for teachers. I also hope that with improved coding skills, I can automate the process entirely so I will not have to verify teachers myself. Teachers can receive their acceptance/rejection email immediately after submission because the process will be much more efficient. With this, I hope this program can be national. I hope to expand the network so that there can be a designated drop-off zone for members of the general community who wish to donate due to extra supplies lying around. I want to be able to obtain a server so messaging can occur on the site for convenience or for people uncomfortable with sharing phone numbers and such.

Hi- Catherine. I really like this idea. You seem to know a lot about this space and have all of the tools to get this website active!
Best of Luck!
