Date You Started Your Project Started

June/ 3/ 2019

Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Start-Up (first few activities have happened)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

All of our mobiles devices can be used as eyes and ears by big brother to spy on us which is a huge privacy concern, hippa and other regulatory standard liability, and leaves us open to hackers who want to spy on us.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

We are using directional ultra sound to create a pad that will stop anything on top of it from being able to listen in or record, and are developing proprietary inaudible ultra sound to create secure hotspots and secure entire rooms and spaces.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

I started noticing ads for things relevant to my personal conversations and realized it was a huge issue when I started getting TeleHealth ads. My medical information is supposed to be between my doctor and I, but Big Brother was also listening. After doing research I found there was no middle ground when it came to using technology, where we can pick the conveniences and benefits of our devices or have privacy. Never both. As a philosophy and political science major I had no idea how to turn my idea into a business, so I brought it to the entrepreneurship department at the University of Delaware where I received a grant for their Pre-Accelerator to learn about customer discovery and focusing on the problem. I am now pursuing commercialization and building Little Brother full time.

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

I see people's eyes get very wide and they smile and tell me I'm going to be a millionaire lol. As I break down our business model and plans for the future, most people try and connect me to someone in their network or offer their own efforts to further Little Brother's. In a short time I've pulled together an advisory board of esteemed individuals and built a strong diverse team that has wowwed many people along the way so far.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Our security targets only sound and our conversations before they ever reach the microphones in our phones and smart devices. Unlike EMI shielding and other forms of jamming that leave our devices useless we encrypt sound in real time. We depend on hardware so whether or not a device is compromised by a hacker, even the best could not flip the off switch on our devices.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

I constantly see people covering their microphones and cameras after our conversations about the problem I am looking to solve. I received University of Delaware's Summer Founders Grant after showing up to the Venture Development Center for the first time in April, as well as received multiple letters of intent to invest as well as letters of interest from companies who want to use our products when we commercialize.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

We are starting the prototyping phase but we need to really start testing our product in different environments and collect data on how much better the secure environments we create are compared to normal ones.

9. Which of the following types of expertise would be most useful for you?

  • Project Plan & Strategy

10. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?

  • Friend support
  • Family support
  • Mentors/advisors

How did you hear about this challenge?

Hi James- I love this idea, as I feel that people are giving up more and more of their privacy in the name of perceived convenience. However my partner and I have a few thoughts.
1.We would recomend considering the affect that these sounds may have on pets. It is widely known that dogs can hear frequencies much higher than humans can, and pet owners would be wary using such a product when it may negatively affect our furry friends.
2.When discussing the advantages of this technology, we both immediately thought of how useful this would be in a phone case that could toggle on and off.
Best of Luck!!

Hi James, I like that you're tackling the issue of technology invading our privacy. This is a concern for myself as well as many people I work with.
I don't understand your idea exactly though, if you have something blocking your voice, how will the technology help you? Like, why even have the Alexa or such items? Are you going to have it so you control when it is on or not? It seems a bit more complicated than just typing whatever it is on your computer or writing it on a piece of paper.
I also agree with Sarah Wheeler. The term "Big Brother" makes it sound like you're just focusing on the government, or are a bit paranoid. Private hackers, scammers, and other such groups are as big of a concern, if not bigger.
Also, Eavestopping? genius, I LOVE that.
Best of luck!!

It’s cool idea; with cybercrime on the rise and laws/punishment coming slowly behind there is defiantly a market for this device. But be careful not to put off some potential buyers the overuse of “Big Brother” Depending on who you are taking to this term could help or hurt you pitch.
