Date You Started Your Project Started
Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.
Idea (hoping to get started in the future)
1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
A techological, educational, and environmental issue. In the advent of the $1.2 trillion student loan debt crisis in America, I believe it's important to allow technology to build an ecosystem of change within our society, and with that change should bring more eco-friendly access to textbooks to students for absolutely no cost to them. And it matters, because it reduces the costs of college, while discouraging trees from being cut.
2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
I would try to jumpstart a platform for this and have it built like a subscription site, which would then allow verified university professors or the university itself to then rent aquired licenced e-books for a class for a certain period of time or for as long as they want.
3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?
I was in college for STEM for a couple years, and I wasn't really financially secured, to the point I felt that I needed to drop out, in order organize what I was doing. I heard about the student debt crisis for years, and I never wanted it to happen to me, even if the job I got at the end paid well. So I always loved technology, and I'm still willing to persue STEM, albiet pushed back for a later date. And I do care about the education system as well as the environment as a whole, so I figured why not use technology to tackle all three issues or even many more issues altogether?
4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”
I want a less toxic environment
5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
Well hypothetically, I see it helping students have better access to textbooks, as well as allowing professors to take a more dynamic approach in the way they care for students, by using the service to provide free books, instead of letting students just buy their own, which can cause stress. Students that don't have access can either access them from their school's computer lab, or have a request to have a hardback version delivered from the site, if they don't have a reliable source to browse the web. The user interface should be fluid and not confusing, which can keep track of everyone's subscription and how many e-books they're distributing. This should please the Amazon Rainforest, students' pockets, and give moral appreciation to either professor or university wanting to make a difference.
6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
I believe this can be snowballed into an even bigger service, which could provide additional tools for both professors and students.
7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
Even if the site isn't successful, the fact of it being discussed and tried should make a good enough difference to allow others to try and attempt to achieve the same result.
8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
Talking to my old friends that are super good at Computer Science
