Date You Started Your Project Started
Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.
Idea (hoping to get started in the future)
1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
Students often get stuck on learning something and have nowhere to go for help. In today’s hectic world, parents may be busy, teachers may be unavailable, private tutors are too expensive, etc. The student feels helpless with nowhere to turn to and may give up in frustration. Currently, there is a lack of free 1-on-1 educational tutoring available to help students in need. No more! Our free service removes this roadblock in the learning process.
2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
We will create a S2S website which facilitates peer-to-peer student volunteer tutoring. The website allows students knowledgeable in certain subjects to tutor other students who are seeking help in those subjects. The website connects volunteer and student through 2 channels - audio (using discord) & visual (using aww whiteboard). The interactive tutoring session will be in real-time with 2-way communication between the tutor & the student. The student will be able to ask questions freely. To increase accessibility, there will be no charge to the student, completely free. For example, if I was struggling with Bernoulli’s principle in physics, I could log in to the site, post my help request, and have a student expert teach it to me. It’s as easy as that! The S2S website will partner with schools to further spread accessibility and to boost both the tutor and student pool. This never-before-seen service will help numerous students across the nation in so many ways! Tutors will feel good knowing that they are helping someone else and contributing to society. Our service will provide the supportive feeling that a student has somewhere to go when they are stuck in the learning process!
3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?
Hello! My name is Akerth and this is my story. Tutoring has always been one of my favorite things to do. It is an amazing feeling when my student understands a new concept. I first got into tutoring when I taught my sister money principles, loved it! I tutor my cousins and family friends with schoolwork and math. Last summer I went to India and volunteered teaching chess, math and english to kids in need. I volunteered 140+ hours last year, earning the Presidential Volunteer Service Gold Award.
Hello! My name is Chinmay and this is my story. I have been fortunate to have won many math, chess, and science awards, both locally and nationally. I enjoy spreading my knowledge in these topics to friends and classmates both inside and outside of school. I raise funds from tutoring that I in-turn donate to an international education fund to promote learning in underdeveloped countries.
4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”
… we know that our idea can greatly benefit students all over the nation. Both of us are fortunate and grateful to have been given endless educational opportunities. We believe that providing free tutoring is the best way to help other students. We want to ensure that they are not held back by barriers that stop them from reaching their educational potential. We truly enjoy tutoring! Tutoring is a way for us to expand our horizons and to give back to the community while making a positive change!
So excited to share our idea with you!
5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
Let’s say Mike wants help with Geometry Postulates and Theorems. After he creates an account on our website, he can simply enter in his tutoring request & click a button to be connected with an appropriate Geometry student-tutor. Tutor Lisa has already signed in & is waiting for Mike’s tutor request. Lisa will then teach Mike those requested Geometry topics and field any questions. Mike will receive the requested tutoring/guidance all for free. He will be asked to submit his feedback on the tutoring session. The tutor receives volunteer service hours for their time spent. To ensure tutors are properly qualified, we plan on Skype interviewing them to find out where their strengths lie. Only knowledgeable tutors will be invited to tutor on our website. Also, we plan on adding features to our website like, virtual reward systems, internet safety features, a newsletter, and on demand videos!
6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
The 1st X factor is the fact that our tutoring is completely FREE and is available & accessible from ANYWHERE. We believe this is important because we want to be 100% inclusive. We offer ALL students a chance to learn, with no physical or monetary barriers. Studies show that student-to-student tutoring leads to higher educational achievement and increased academic motivation. The 2nd X factor is that tutoring students on the website will count as volunteer service hours for the tutor. The tutor will receive certified volunteer hours that will demonstrate their POSITIVE impact on the community!
7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
Together, we have already impacted many students through in person 1-on-1 tutoring. We have tutored a myriad of students spanning many grades and ages. Our students typically thank us and tell us that we are helping them a lot. It feels great to help someone else and to pass on something we have learned. It is surely rewarding to help students in person but creating the online S2S website will be our way of stepping up to help a much larger audience while encouraging more students to tutor like we do. We know we will make a difference because we are not only tutors, we were once students of tutors in math, chess, english, etc. We have seen both sides so we have been in a student’s shoes. Even tutors can learn from each other to sharpen their skills. We envision that our internet-based student-to-student free tutoring program will make a positive difference to students across the nation!
8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
We can get to the next level by creating our website, contacting schools, and finding student tutors. The seed money, extra resources, and business guidance from T-Mobile will greatly benefit our entire project. We are well into designing the website layout and creating the marketing plan. We have started to contact potential tutors at our schools. We want to start off in the USA and then grow this website into an international non-profit. We feel that there are students out there who need help and students out there that would LOVE to help! They just need a place to find each other. We are passionate about our dream to bring free tutoring to every student across the land!
We WON’T STOP until we make our VISION into a REALITY! THANK YOU!!
