Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Start-Up (first few activities have happened)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

Mental health is one of the biggest problems the world is facing today, and society continues to put stigmas on showing and expressing people's emotional health and state. Sensus aims to reduce these stigmas while allowing people to see their emotional and mental health over a period of time.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

Sensus is an app that allows people to become more aware of their mental health and be able to track their emotional state and symptoms through a series of questions and therapeutic activities. Although mental health issues should be diagnosed by a medical professional, Sensus can help people do a personal check-in of their daily mental health fitness and track it overtime. Using artificial intelligence combined with cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), Sensus charts the progression of a person’s mood, emotional state, mental health and overall well-being over time. The app asks a series of daily questions and uses artificial intelligence to map their health over time and determine and suggest activities or exercises to help prevent stress and strengthen one’s mood and mental health.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

We are both part of Issaquah Youth Board, and focus on leading a group called teen advocacy, which strives to give a voice to issues teens are facing. One of the biggest problems we see today is teenagers struggling to express their mental and emotional health, especially due to social and academic pressures. Together, we helped found State of Mind, one of the biggest student-run mental health conferences for teens. However, walking away from the experience, we realized that although the students in attendance of the conference gained knowledge on safe spaces to express their health, many others don’t have access to such resources. Inspired by this, we turned this influential conference experience into an app called Sensus, which aims to help teenagers track their mental and emotional health while dissolving stigmas that remain on expressing ones’ mental state.

4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”

Track your mental and emotional health using Sensus.

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

Sensus asks a series of daily questions to assess and map the user’s current mental health and mood, such as one’s emotional state, hours of sleep, stress, and physical well-being, which have all been proven to be the main factors of teen anxiety. Over time, the app uses artificial intelligence to map out the daily answers to show the dynamics of one’s life. Then, suggestions are made as to activities the person can do that can reduce their stress levels, give positive reinforcement and supplement areas that they have reported as being low. For example, getting more sleep, talking with a friend, or taking a walk outside to get some fresh air. Sensus tracks and compares answers to those that imply unhealthy behavior, such as repeated levels of high anxiety, low sleep, and sadness. Additionally, Sensus provides relaxation options such as guided meditation and a daily journal.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

The key difference between existing mental health apps and Sensus it that our solution is a one stop shop for both tracking someone’s mental health and emotions as well as recommending how to address negative feelings such as sadness and anxiety. It also suggests activities to improve ones’ mental health on a personal basis by using Machine Learning algorithms. Sensus is targeted toward the many teens that do not have access to a school advisor, counselor or someone they can trust to discuss these personal topics. No platform is quite like Sensus based on these three unique features.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

Although we are still developing the Minimum Viable Product, we have given our friends and family prototypes to try out the concept of Sensus. From their feedback, the simple daily surveys and journaling offered by Sensus has significantly improved their quality of life, as they are now more aware of their mental and emotional health. Also, those that have tried our prototypes note that they love the activity suggestions, such as telling a joke to a friend or taking a walk, as they are fun and mood boosting. Additionally, we have found that Sensus users enjoy using the meditation section, especially listening to calming sounds while practicing yoga. Our early users love the concept and functionality of Sensus, and when we launch the app publicly later this year, we hope to help a broader set of teenagers become fully aware of their mental and emotional health.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Over the past few months we have been really focused on developing a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to publicly launch later this year. Once the MVP is launched, we want to incorporate more suggestions as to what users can do to improve their mental and emotional state. As we collect more user feedback, we will also be able to refine the Machine Learning Algorithms to better help users identify their sentiment. From this, we want to eventually be able to create a community on the Sensus app, where users can anonymously share stories about their experiences of persevering through mental health challenges and stigmas. Ultimately, our goal is to have every teen using Sensus, and making it instrumental in de-stigmatizing mental health.
