Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Idea (hoping to get started in the future)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

The problem I am helping to solve is giving college students the opportunity to pay a much lower amount for their textbooks.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

We will be creating an app that will allow students to subscribe and get all the textbooks from the textbook providers. Doing this will make the students pay less. We willl accomplish this by using a subscription service.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

The story behind the project was just a brainstorming session where we came up with ideas to do. We came up with an idea that would benefit students by making them pay less, but also giving them a motivation to do volunteer work.

4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

The story behind the project was just a brainstorming session where we came up with ideas to do. We came up with an idea that would benefit students by making them pay less, but also giving them a motivation to do volunteer work.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Our project’s two biggest differences is the price of our app subscription of 120$ while physical books cost more than this. Another difference is that you could volunteer around your area. You are then gifted 5$ credit towards the app which would save you 5$.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

How we plan to make a difference is we will decrease student’s debts. These kinds of debts can really tire the person out as in saving money for their debt, with this app they can save a lot of money and decrease their debt.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Our ideas that would take our project to the next level is we will be featuring community service special events. For example when it’s near christmas day the app would have some kind of event community service event. This would promote social change and people that are using the app can interact with each other.

9. Which of the following types of expertise would be most useful for you?

  • Accounting & Finance

10. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?

  • Mentors/advisors

The issue you are tackling is definitely a real one, which most--if not all--college students face. Because most colleges use different textbooks, partnering with individual colleges to create an app that best matches their curriculum might make the app better tailored to app users. The college might even advertise the app as an alternative to purchasing textbooks, publicizing your idea. It might be worthwhile considering if some system to provide physical textbooks is an option (as many students prefer the physical book). That being said, I truly believe this idea has potential to improve the lives of many college students and can't wait to see where you take this!
