Date You Started Your Project Started

Jan/8/2019

Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Growth (have moved past the very first activities; working towards the next level of expansion)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

At my high school, diversity is never an expectation. The number of students who look like me is jarringly slim. There is a clear divide in how many people like me are taking advanced science courses. Also, if you look back in history, so few of science’s innovators have been women, let alone women of color. My Conference aims to empowering marginalized young women to pursue careers in STEM by giving them access to professional STEM mentors.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

My groundbreaking approach is simple, use technology to bridge the opportunity gap. The world is now a global village and I’m taking advantage of the internet by using platforms like Google Hangout, Adobe Connect, Zoom, and building a thriving private social network that allows vetted professionals to remain in communication with each girl, while being monitored to ensure relationships are built, opportunities are created and students are nurtured until they get to their full potentials.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

Rather than healing individuals as a medical doctor, I want to develop and employ systematic changes to improve the global health status. My career interest stems from my desire to combine my interests in medical science with my civic mindedness. Having lost an aunt in the West African Ebola epidemic, I wish to aid in the developments that provide healthcare access to people around the world. Furthermore,I'm motivated by my deep desire to help Middle and High school girls gain access to resources that empower them to see themselves as STEM professionals and business owners. I believe that no career path is specific to any gender and that whatever a man can do, a woman can do,too.

4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”

Girl-Focused STEM Conference Held in Apex,North Carolina. Girls from across Wake and Durham Counties, North Carolina who love science, technology, engineering and math were in the spotlight Saturday June 8th,2019. The STEM Conference opened with Dr. Mandy Cohen, secretary of North Carolina Department Of Health And Human Services.

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

When a student signs up to attend my conference, she meets professional women who also serves as mentor and participates in breakout sessions and mentorship opportunity(facetoface and through our private online social network. Since the inception of the Girls In STEM, I have partnered with over 11 STEM Corporations, 110 Community Outreach Centers in 5 states, including Liberia, West Africa, and I have also linked over 350 girls to STEM professionals in their communities.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

The Young Women In STEM Conference helps underrepresented Middle and High school girls gain access to STEM education and mentorship opportunities through attending an in person conferences, technology and a private social network of of professional women.
