Date You Started Your Project Started

Founding Date: 11/04/2018

Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Start-Up (first few activities have happened)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

The doubling time for the number of Americans ages 65 and older in the United States has just begun and will upshot the senior population from 52 million to 95 million by 2020. This dramatic projection only accentuates the rising lack of communication and connection between family members and the health of their elders. In specific, elders are unable to properly express their health and family members are thus unable to maintain a peace of mind.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

AmityConnections aims to solve this issue by introducing AmityConnect. AmityConnect connects family members with the health of their elders by aggregating real-time health data from smart medical devices onto a single, mobile platform accessible by family members at any given time; thus providing them with a constant peace of mind. AmityConnect acts as an epicenter for numerous consumer-based smart medical devices that offer open application programming interfaces (e.g. FitBit, Apple, Hexoskin, iHealth, etc) to third-parties/developers. Through application programming interfaces, the health analysis and details offered by smart medical devices are aggregated and available to family members within the AmityConnect platform, allowing for the signaling of abnormalities within an elderly individual's health. This repurpose of health data aggregation provides family members with an opportunity to take upon a proactive approach and draw validated conclusions regarding the health of their elders. Family members are able to stay connected and offer effective care to their elders by avoiding the chaos associated with the use of multiple smart medical device apps.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

During a normal discussion, I was appalled when I learned that Kushi, one of the team members, had a particularly striking story that allowed us to identify a worsening problem that had never been addressed. Kushi’s grandmother, with a prior blood clot history and respiratory health conditions, would constantly reassure Kushi’s mother that she was perfectly fine in an attempt to not worry her. Her mother had bought her grandmother a medical device intended to better monitor her respiratory conditions. Nonetheless, without access to the data being tracked and the inability of her mother to constantly call her grandmother residing on the other side of the globe, the device was not much help. Around 3 years ago, Kushi’s grandmother passed away; to this date, Kushi’s mother lives with the agonizing thought that if she were to have been more aware, her mother could have been alive.

4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

Trevor is 35 years old and lives in California with his wife and two lovely kids. With a 9-5 job, Trevor juggles his responsibilities and finds himself at a loss of time to always check up on the health of his aging parents far off in Mexico. In an attempt to better track the health of his parents, Jane and Jorge, Trevor purchased the best smart medical devices with the highest ratings that accommodated the pre-existing chronic conditions of his parents. After 4 months of his parents using the smart medical devices, Trevor found himself still in the dark without any clue as to the health status of his parents. He soon found AmityConnect, where he was able to be in control and was constantly informed of the health of his parents through the devices. Trevor was able to receive all the necessary information on the health of his parents in one single place for him to always be proactive.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

AmityConnect is the first health data aggregation platform to exist with the purpose of connecting family members with elders and providing an opportunity to take a proactive approach. With the manipulation of open application programming interfaces, the AmityConnect platform is able to not just aggregate raw data, but redirect a valid health analysis overview to family members, equipping them with what they need to make informed decisions. Our competitors within the market focus on reactive care and do not provide family members with an opportunity to be aware of the health of their elders.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

Over the course of a year, we have been striving to impact the world by turning AmityConnect into a reality. We have conducted numerous marketing research, market analysis, customer discovery, initial product testing, and attained numerous sources of validation. First, we created a minimum viable product through the form of a simulation, in which a test group of 50 subjects were assigned different virtual elders and were differently updated on the health of their elders based on their respective test groups. The simulation allowed us to attain valuable sources of information that provided a deeper insight into our potential target market. Furthermore, we have been discussing with numerous local companies and business professionals within our market and have been able to establish a connection with a local eldercare center that is interested in promoting AmityConnect to family members.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Since we have already created a solid foundation and plan that has been supported by business professionals within our market, our main focus is on app development, user testing, and marketing. We are currently in the process of developing a professional user interface of the app and are attempting to create a simple version of the app to be used for in-depth user testing. Our current marketing efforts through Facebook have been effective and have allowed us to attain 1,500 full views of a one-minute explainer video of AmityConnect. Our goal is to create more promotional content and forms of marketing that allow us to reach a broader market. Overall, we envision that these three pursuits will allow us to make AmityConnect into reality.

I can see how this tool would be very useful. I especially liked your example of supporting elders who might be living in another country. Keep it up. It sounds like you have made amazing headway!
