Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.
Idea (hoping to get started in the future)
1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
The creation of a global economy and support of capitalist economic divisions has exacerbated educational inequality throughout the world, leaving a handful of individuals with over a third of the world's wealth and billions without opportunity or resources necessary to educate themselves. By supplying resources and equal educational opportunity to underserved individuals, we can stimulate mutual growth globally and catalyze equal representation.
2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
We plan to create a non-profit international organization called Centimane focused on Cyber Security, with plans to include other subjects, that has three pillars of focus: Academics, Outreach, and Diversity. With Academics, our goal is providing free resources online (CTFs, demos, and tutorials) to facilitate equal educational opportunity globally. With Outreach, we plan to host events in our local areas to create global awareness of Computer Science and provide opportunity to gain more experience through physical guidance. With Diversity, we plan to provide opportunity for people in underserved communities by recruiting volunteers to conduct outreach programs and create a more inclusive and diverse environment. While still in the beginning stages, we have multiple contacts globally that can facilitate the dissemination of our organization to further its global elements. This not only provides more people with vast opportunity, but it enables the integration of more diverse peoples into STEM- which furthers equal representation within technological fields and stimulates diversified ideas through the introduction of people from completely different backgrounds and perspectives.
3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?
Lack of equal representation in STEM is an extremely important problem to me. In all my STEM classes there are 2-3 females. In AP Physics II, for example, I am the only female out of around twenty students and feel a disconnection between myself and my peers. The only way to work together as a country is to realize that people in underserved and underrepresented areas and circumstances are not provided with the opportunity to give back to society. Women being a main underrepresented party in STEM fields, amassing a meager total of 13% in cybersecurity and being an overall minority in engineering fields. To mitigate cyber-threats, we need to bring awareness and opportunity to those without the resources to combat them. Only through this collaborative effort to protect and support our nation and her people can we achieve better security and a better society.
4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”
5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
When a person gets involved with our project, they have access to a plethora of resources that will educate them on different sectors of Cyber Security, including but not limited to Cyber Security ethics, forensic data analysis, web exploitation, binary exploitation, basic system hardening, data securing, and Operating System details. They could then study these skills by following or watching the demos performed on our site and reading through the articles and visuals we have created for intuitive learning. A person accessing our materials will also be faced with the opportunity to share our resources with other interested young people. This will create a chain reaction and increase the overall amount of people interested or experienced with basic STEM. Groups or organizations that may partner with Centimane will help either create curriculum or run programs to support equal education.
6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
Our organization Centimane is different from other educational or activist STEM organizations because ours emphasizes the provision of curriculum to younger audiences, giving the younger generations more opportunity to pursue STEM as an earlier age and cover more of Cyber Security or Computer Science in general. It also combines activism both online and in person along with our free educational resources, which is a combination that is not found in most modern organizations either focused completely on academics, diversity, or outreach, or some combination of two of these pillars- never all 3.
7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
We will know if we are making a difference if the people utilizing our resources provide us with positive feedback. We will also tally the amount of people participating in our events and have a counter on our website for the number of individuals that have registered with it. Eventually, once we gain sponsorship or progress with fundraising, we will create a diversity program that gathers talented youth across the globe as ambassadors for Centimane. They will spread our curriculum or create their own innovative ideas to implement in their local areas. This will increase our overall impact by at least 100%, and will result in more people being supported globally. Our ambassadors will also count all participants in their events or all the people that access their materials, which we will add to an overall count of people our organization has affected.
8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
Given our current creation of a curriculum plan, I am planning on expediting the creation of curriculum and a website. Within the next few months our organization will have solidified a team and furthered the development of intuitive and educational Cyber Security curriculum. After this, web development will being at the end of the year and towards the beginning of 2020. This places the overall completion of the first stages of our organization at around January or February. From here, we will have contacts across the globe volunteer or host events in their local areas to provide educational opportunity to children while utilizing our materials. We will also then contact schools and provide them with our materials.
