Date You Started Your Project Started

Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Start-Up (first few activities have happened)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

The problem lies between what a toothpick floss serves as a function and how it is produced. The use is to remove food particles and serves to be used a single, and for that purpose, it's produced fully out of plastic. As a local swimmer and community advocate, I see how these floss picks end up in our trash and at times into our vulnerable oceans. Solving a way where we can eliminate these two problems will keep less plastic in the oceans.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

The most ideal solution would be to make a reusable toothpick floss, where consumers may use the floss unlimited times. The first concern we had was food particles creating an unsanitary tool. To keep this tool hygienic, we propose to make a stainless steel body that will prevent germ collection. Researchers at the University of Birmingham have discovered a germ-free stainless steel product by mixing nitrogen, carbon, and silver. They plan to make this product accessible to the public, which will allow us to compose our tools fully from it. The interior body of the floss will contain a spool of natural biodegradable silk floss. I've met with an engineer who will help fulfill the design concept to make this tool practical and compact. Finally, our product will be stored in a stainless steel body container, which may be attached to your purse, bag, key-chain, wallet, etc. The purpose of this container is to allow consumers to carry their "Changepick" anywhere and everywhere. With its powerful body and sustainable floss, they can rest assured that our product will upkeep dental hygiene, as well as keep a small portion of plastic out of our environment

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

As a young student, I have always been an inventor. During my college career, I have been heavily involved with business competitions and environment outreach. My first year of competing as a freshman, I was not successful. After realizing that I wasn't providing resolutions, I've decided to upscale my problem search and find better solutions. Two years later, I invented Babicam, a wireless watch gadget that prevents; children from being lost, oxygen deprivation through drowning, and allows 24/7 vitals. My partner and I took first place. The next year I've invented Legal-Ease, a portable Alexa style legal research tool, once again we took first. Swimming at our local beaches and mentoring at current social movements inspired me to invent Changepick, one of my proudest product. I want to be a contributor to eliminating plastic waste by offering a sustainable alternative that brings more.

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

By using Changepick, individuals will have access to a great hygiene tool while reducing plastic waste. They will reach for their floss, which is conveniently placed inside a hygienic container and floss away food particles. For every purchase, Changepick and investors of the product will donate towards ocean and ecosystem cleanup, as well as community advocates to encourage others to eliminate plastic waste.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Similar products have been invented but unfortunately they don't eliminate any problem but instead provide a temporary solution. Their tool housing are composed of 40-80% plastic while being very bulky and do not produce great results. Changepick is a product that does not rely on plastic, is compact while being convenient, and produced to be sustainable.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

We've already received plenty of high regards towards our product! A majority of our support comes from the dental and environmental realm. More and more individuals are looking for products to replace plastic use in hopes to help the planet. We know that Changepick will not only be successful in eliminating a great waste of plastic but also an inspiration to continue change towards a more sustainable future. Please contact me individually to have access to concept drawings and market research.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

We are still in the concept design stage and have partnered with patent officers who are in the process of protecting our work. We also hope to have a functional prototype soon once that is complete where we can present our product to investors as well as potential consumers.

9. Which of the following types of expertise would be most useful for you?

  • Marketing Strategy

10. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?

  • Friend support
  • Family support
  • Mentors/advisors
