1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

The diabetes pandemic is increasing at massive rates. More than 400 million people around the world & 1 in 10 Americans have type 2 diabetes. Currently, having type 2 diabetes is a life-changing event as diet and schedules have to be shaped around it. There are not many noninvasive techniques for monitoring of type 2 diabetes they are painful, invasive, and highly repetitive.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

To solve this problem, I want to create a device & an app that can detect blood sugar levels noninvasively. One way to do this is to test saliva for sugar levels. Case studies have shown that sugar levels in saliva do correlate to blood sugar levels. The solution to this problem encompasses a device that can take saliva and detect the glucose levels through having the glucose react with chemicals on “saliva” strips and can transmit the data into an app on a phone using proton ion transistors.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

My family has a history of type 2 diabetes. I’ve grown up watching my parents and family use blood glucose monitors and other similar devices to meticulously monitor their glucose levels. I’ve watched them repeatedly prick their fingers for samples of blood. I’m a member of a health and science club that promotes healthy lifestyles and how to prevent preventable diseases (such as Type 2 Diabetes) to elementary students. Throughout the years, I have seen family members struggle with this condition as well as struggle with the detection methods.

I am stepping up to make a change because my society needs it. Type 2 diabetes affects youth and the elderly and it affects one's lifestyle heavily. Blood glucose monitoring is very tedious and painful as it is invasive. Making a method that is noninvasive and easier to access is vital.

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

Ben is a young adult with Type 2 Diabetes. Since he has a strict daily schedule, monitoring his blood glucose levels using invasive glucometers is tough for him to manage on a strict schedule. Using the Diabetes Saliva Biosensor for Glucose, Ben is able to monitor and record his sugar levels and efficiently in school or work settings without having to prepare or clean up much after.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Currently, there are not many methods of noninvasive electronic methods for monitoring sugar/glucose levels in the human body. Those that are currently used for diabetes are all invasive or require a longer time period or workspace. Implementing this solution allows for an efficient and fast way to easily monitor glucose levels.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

My project is currently at an idea-stage. I plan on using my regional science fair as well as other outlets to further improve and mold this idea. I want to implement this idea in medical and scientific societies so that patients and people with Type 2 Diabetes have access to and can use this.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

I would like to partner and get a mentor for this project. I would like to get aid with research (more in-depth) and technical (coding/hardware/software).
