Idea (hoping to get started in the future)
1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
Social conditioning results in paralyzing environments which prevent people from being themselves. Many are afraid to neglect the status quo. The problem is that conformist culture is encouraged 24/7. Those different are often rejected. Without freedom of self-expression, we cannot have a promising present or future. Eliminating imposed conventionalism matters because to enact change, we must inspire minds to reinvent our communities.
2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
Our solution to the stringency social conditioning manifests is to disrupt the status quo and host art events that encourage people to be unapologetically courageous and live open-mindedly. To unlearn self-limiting social standards, we present Party Playground – an all-inclusive community organization that hosts colorful art-making spaces to use nostalgia to remind folks of the endless possibilities and the fearlessness of childhood. These spaces reconnect individuals to their childhood mentality and foster community through the shared experience of reattaining one’s courage, regaining one’s boldness, and building art. We chose art as our medium because art has many benefits inside and outside the classroom. Art is inventive and builds the foundation for future changemakers. Art instruction also helps with the development of social skills, decision-making, and risk-taking. Furthermore, our events will feature spaces for art display, making, and instruction. Our events have an educational component where people learn foundational art techniques from each other. Having these various components help build a welcoming atmosphere for all community members and art experience levels.
3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?
Kemi and I started this project to provide community feel-good spaces. Growing up in Oakland exposed us to rich art scenes, but I still reminisce about cut school art programs. To counteract this void, we use art to reconnect to the unapologetic nature of childhood. We cultivate fearless and confident energies to fuel forward-thinking. Although we are creating Party Playground now, this is not where our changemaking story begins. For years, we have been dedicated to strengthening our communities. We held leadership positions in college student organizations and are current hospital volunteers. The establishment of Party Playground allows us to continue our passion for making a difference by designing colorful spaces that inspire people to challenge societal pressures and unlearn those divisional teachings.
4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”
5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
When community members visit Party Playground, they will be inspired by bright colors in the venue and a light ambiance fueling creative energy. They will be welcomed with local artworks, art materials, music, and bold colors that reminds them of limitless possibilities and daring traits of childhood. By attending our colorful events, folks retrain their brain to release their inhibitions and recenter their mind to reduce heavy thinking. When artists get involved in Party Playground, these creators can showcase their work, expand their network, and educate others. Artists can informally teach art methods, and artists and attendees can create artwork together. No matter who attends Party Playground, our events will increase people’s personal power to live a more meaningful and unobstructed life. To sustain future events, we will auction collaborated artwork and set up donation posts.
6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
Our project is distinct because we create colorful spaces where folks find their unapologetic inner child through art. Party Playground is unique because novices have direct access to artists and their work, can collaborate with others on pieces, and learn new techniques. Party Playground is for artists, admirers, aspirants, and all in between. Many fix on art therapy but we aim to ease heavy thoughts. People will learn how to be present in the moment. Our events foster settings that push one’s boundaries and increases one’s personal power to enlighten their life through art.
7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
Experiencing and seeing inspiration come to life in people will affirm the difference we are making. We will know when we have made change when the fearlessness and risk-taking aspects of our community events transcend into people’s mentalities and empowers them to make bold and adventurous choices in their lives. Having exuberant energy and creativity flourish during our events will prove that we are creating necessary, heartwarming connections with our community. Additionally, positive testimonials from attendees and community recognition will assert the change we are bringing forth.
8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
To advance our project, we will scout venues to gauge how much money to fundraise. Also, we will collect donations and partner with local organizations. We will recruit artists to feature and volunteers who embody changemaker traits. Next, we will design flyers to promote. One creative theme per event will highlight varied art forms such as visual, literary, applied, and performing arts. Featured art and collaborative work will be displayed. Potential themes are origami, art graffiti, and wood crafts. We intend to use our platform to give a voice to groups that have been historically repressed such as women, LGBTQ+, POC, indigenous artists, and artists with disabilities. We plan to grow Party Playground’s beyond the Bay Area.
