1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

Let’s review some of the facts. A study found that male students were more likely than females to take engineering and computer science courses during K-12 grades. Once they get to college, only 19.3% of all bachelors degrees in engineering are awarded to women. This lack of diversity follows girls from their early learning phases in high school through to when they start their first full-time job. Without the female voice, we lack innovation.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

Reinvented’s mission is to “reinvent” the general perception of women in STEM fields while also inspiring interest in STEM for women around the world. We are accomplishing this by sharing the diverse stories and experiences of ladies in the field, reporting the latest news in science and technology, and showcasing exclusive interviews with influential women in STEM. We hope to pave the way for future generations of women to become leading pioneers of STEM. Our mission is carried out through the publication of the first printed magazine dedicated to women in STEM. Available in both print and electronic media, Reinvented Magazine’s content focuses on inspiring stories of both past and present women in STEM who are defying the odds in their field and serving as role models for others. Our first issue features an exclusive interview with Former USCTO Megan Smith, an Everyday Changemakers series featuring women like Cassidy Williams and Dr. Anita Sengupta, a DIY Project Tutorial by Beauty & the Bolt, an Advice Column, and exclusive coverage of the NASA Orion AA-2 Test.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

Reinvented Magazine is a magazine written for women in STEM, by women in STEM. One day our founders realized that as they grew up and discovered their passions for STEM, they were reading less and less of the pages of their favorite magazines. They didn’t care about the latest hot celebrity news. Instead, they wanted more engaging content that covered STEM topics and featured their female role models. They mentioned the idea in NCWIT’s Facebook group and the response was tremendous. It quickly became obvious that there was a need for this kind of product in the world, so our founders go to work. Reinvented is a passion project that our founders honestly never thought would end up turning into something real, but we knew that in order to see more women in the professional world, we needed to start at the beginning by showing girls female role models in STEM at a young age.

4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”

Growing up, all 30 of our Reinvented Staff members were looking for role models. They were far and few between, and some of us turned away from our passion because of it. They weren't on TV. They weren't featured in the checkout aisle of the grocery store. They weren't frequently in our families, friends, or neighborhood. They weren't around to encourage us to explore and build and break and fail and try again. Yep, we're talking about women in STEM.

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

In July we hosted a crowdfunding campaign to gain that initial round of financial support we needed to get our magazine off the ground. We were overwhelmingly successful, making over $1500 more than our goal. But the money wasn’t the most impactful thing we got out of that campaign. We got emails galore from moms and dads of young girls saying how excited their daughters were to read this magazine because they wanted to be astronauts, engineers, computer scientists, and more when they grew up. We even had one girl break open her own piggy bank to buy herself a copy of Reinvented. These are our readers. They’re the young girls with big dreams in their eyes who are just waiting for someone to show them the path to achieving it. That’s what our magazine does. It gives them those role models and exposes them to new ideas and fields that they may want to join in on one day.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Many popular magazines today are aimed towards a female audience, focusing primarily on fashion and pop culture. What about the girls with a passion for STEM? Those young women aren’t going to find their role models amongst the pages of a fashion magazine. Maybe Popular Science? While the content there may be closer to our interests, tech magazines still seem to think that STEM fields are a “man’s job.” We’re going to change that by printing the nation’s first magazine written for women in STEM, highlighting the stories of inspiring women in STEM to create the roles models our readers crave.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

We currently have over 2000 readers across the globe, with over 250 email newsletter subscribers and a social media reach of nearly 10,000 users each month. We are growing everyday, with more and more girls wanting to read out content. In addition to our standard magazine sales, our One-for-One Program allows us to donate one copy of the magazine for every magazine bought. Through this initiative, over 1000 copies of Reinvented Magazine’s first issue are making their way to girls who are underprivileged, or might not have access to educational resources and opportunities. We will continue to donate a hard-copy for each magazine purchased as next issues are released quarterly. Outside of our readers, we have already began gaining the support of several influential partners and sponsors, such as Wogrammer, Beauty & the Bolt, Wonder Women Tech, and HP.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Since Issue No. 1 is about to start shipping out next week, our team has already shifted its focus to begin working on Issue No. 2, which is currently scheduled to start shipping in December. Our next big step will come hand in hand with the shipment of Issue No. 2, the start of our subscription service. We plan to publish four issues, one every three months, in 2020 as part of a subscription service. In 2021 we expect to expand on that even further by publishing six issues, one every two months. Finally, by 2022 we expect to have a monthly subscription service in place for our readers.
