Idea (hoping to get started in the future)
1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
To lower the amount of STD outbreaks within the community. Students ages 15-25 are a large majority of the new STD diagnoses and its all due to the conversation of sexually transmitted diseases is thrown out the door. These conversations are known as taboo and safe sex needs to be known that it is an option. These students need to understand that this is an epidemic and it should be talked about daily since students are affected by it everyday.
2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
I want to be able to go out and be a spokesperson for this epidemic. Students should understand the consequences for not practicing safe sex. Students should be able to know the options that are available instead of it being looked down upon. Showing students the different options and letting them know that STD testing isn't embarrassing or frightening. Its in good nature to stay healthy and making sure no diseases are spread. I plan to reach out to the community and share my own story on how this problem affected my own life.
3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?
I want to create this change because a friend of mine was unaware that he carried the herpes simplex 2 virus and was asymptomatic for quite some time. He had unprotected sex with a girl, which caused her to become infected and she had an outbreak within 2 weeks. She was hospitalized and was on major medication due to the virus. If she had known that practicing safe sex wasnt just for not having children, its to protect her from situations like this she would have cared more. She is on a birth control and thought she was being safe. I wanted to share my friends own story and let other students know it could happen to anyone. This situation won't get him down, but it has changed my mindset to wanting to inform the society that we need to get a grasp on the spread of these diseases and that we need to be proactive when it comes to keeping our bodies safe.

I am stepping up to make this change because it is a running epidemic in our society. Students do not know how to be proactive when it comes to practicing safe sex and when it comes to STD testing. As a community we need to put aside the stigma of STDs and come together to kick its butt. We should be heloing one another instead of hiding the conversation of STDs. 1 in 4 adolescent's have an STD, to break that statistic we need to be proactive in our conversations.
5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
When a group or person gets involved with my project they will be helping teach students methods of safe sex and informing them on where to get tested for STDs. They will be spokespeople who will proactively talk to this society on how to stay safe and making sure they do not come in contact with these diseases. It will teach students to be independent with their own lives and be respectful of others lives.
6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
The difference about my program is that they will actually be proactively teaching students other methods of practicing safe sex other than abstinence. When I was in high school all I was taught was abstinence and the conversation was over. I didn't learn much about what to do when I did become sexually active. I never thought it could happen and I believed you had to be sleeping around with several people to contact it. It could happen from just being with ONE person. These students need to learn that.
7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
I am planning on making the difference in my community by making sure people are proactively getting tested with each new sexual partner and that they practice safe sex no matter what the circumstance. I plan to help lower the statistics on this epidemic and keeping students away from these diseases.
8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
I plan to pitch my idea to a corporation or school that is willing to be proactive with me on this situation.
