Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.
Start-Up (first few activities have happened)
1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
We’re aiming to solve political illiteracy amongst youth. Many times people who benefit the most from political solutions, are the ones who are able to receive the knowledge to do so. Solving this problem matters because for a 3rd-world country to be able to succeed it has to be able to break down language, economical, and political barriers.Nobody deserves to face poverty, unemployment, homelessness, corruption-information is the key to prosper.
2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
This app will be engaging due to our audience as they proceed to learn about political policies implemented around the world. The player will be assigned as a “leader” of a certain size of people and the goal is to determine and use policies to accomplish goals. By having real world examples in the app that takes the user through many political scenarios, while educating them along the way.It will be easily accessible to the user in times where a conventional education may not be accessible, due to loss in money, home, or anything that proves detrimental to one’s learning. As a whole,we’re planing on solving this problem by teaching those who have no sort of knowledge of some political issues at least something which they could benefit off of.Many people tend to not know their rights and a lot of the times their rights tend to get violated but fear overwhelms them so they choose to stay quiet. In this app, what would be one of the main targets would be to make sure that those who live in fear have a voice that can be heard.Through the chats in the app, users have chance to be able to express their feelings about the political issues which surround them and affect their daily lives.
3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?
We started this project in response to corrupt world leaders in third world countries that are making it harder for people to become politically active in the decisions that inevitably affect their lives. This project aims at removing that barrier and educating those who are victims of this type of tyrannical behavior. My main inspiration however, lies in the corruption of the Mexican government. When the most recent president left office, Enrique Peña Nieto, there was already plenty of cover ups and dirty money which was being taken from cartels to buy the governors and political leaders’s loyalty. All that “dirty money” was never given to the people who really needed it which were the lower class Mexican citizens. After realizing all of the wrongful things which the Mexican government has done to its own people, I was motivated to help other countries avoid something like this.
4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”
The video is a brief description of what me and another student, Abdi Hussein, have talked about which is why political illiteracy has to be addressed and why efforts have to be made to make sure that people all over the world are able to express their rights. A lot of the times, many citizens are threatened and put in situations where their decisions could possible be their own death. Things like these are what we’re planning on help change through their total expression through an app.
5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
Ideally when you first were to open the app you’d be in the home page which would be where the news articles that are most recent would be. However, when you open the app the first question you’d get would be your language, so you can set the language to the one you’d please. Then it’d take you through the process of configuration which would be what topics you’d be interested in getting notified about and your select what you’d want. After this, it’d ask you if you approve of getting notifications to your mobile device when the news articles are refreshed and new ones pop up. This would be important because after someone begins to use our app, they’re going to want to know more about the political issues around them which would cause them to want to be on the app more. It’d also cause the people to constantly be checking for updates on certain political issues or political debates.
6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
There are very few methods that provide a safe environment for people to gain experience in organizing and changing the environment around them.Typically many only learn about their political institutions through the classroom or not at all.Our solution aims to provide something that’s more hands on and accessible in order to reach an audience that may be typically neglected by financial barriers, language barriers, lack of access to the outside world, instability and civil hostility which can make it dangerous to attend school. We are bridging them with information to gain and use for the future
7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
Many of the students at our school are really supportive when it comes to someone that comes up with an idea which could make it somewhere. So far, I’ve reached out to about 70 students which are mostly seniors at my school. Something which will be necessary however, will be donations or investments into our app so that we can add the most amount of features possible. So far, I’ve obtained the attention of about 45 out of the 70 students which I reached out to. As I’ve spoke with many people, what could eventually happen is there could be tests on the app which could show us (the developers) if they’ve actually been able to learn something from the app. Just as schools review and then have exams, I’d plan on having tests which could show me if the app has been making a difference. Knowledge and understanding is measurable, so this could be tested in many ways, this would just be one.
8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
In the future, we plan on being able to implement polls to our app which would let people using the app have a chance to vote on what they support when it comes to a certain issue. Many applications such as Snapchat and Facebook use polling features to get the insight in people’s thoughts. This eventually could turn into a form of profit because many news enterprises depend on the people’s thoughts on certain political topics which is what we’d sell to them. Eventually in the future we could sell our results to companies so that they get feedback either in a product they sell or feedback on specific political issues. In the long run, after our generation, this app would help create future policies which could help 3rd world nations prosper.
