Me with my Mom & Dad. They are my biggest supporters!
Me at the World Vitiligo Conference
Walking the Red Carpet! I felt beautiful. I want to encourage others to love the skin they are in
When I was at the Conference I was asked to model in a project called The Skin I'm in.
I met Lee Thomas at the Conference. His knowledge inspired me to do what I'm doing now.
I met Iomikoe Johnson at the Conference. Her confidence inspired me.
I met Tiffanie Wiley at the Conference. I learned so much from her. She encouraged me with her knowledge.
I met Andre Joachim Jr at the conference. His knowledge inspired me.
I was holding Vivian's hand. The lady I met at the World Vitiligo Conference.
I met Vivian at the World Vitiligo Conference in June. She was diagnosed with Vitiligo at 86 years old. When we talked she told me I encouraged her! I'm just 14 to hear that made me so happy. I felt good.
Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.
Start-Up (first few activities have happened)
1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
1. The problem is there are no support groups for people with skin conditions in my area to help educate. encourage and support each other.
I'm not sure why no one has started a group but I believe solving the problem by starting a support group will educate people on the skin condition so they can begin to love the akin they are in.
2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
My solution: I am starting a support group. I will have educated people speak on different skin conditions. They will educate people in my community with Vitiligo or other skin conditions. When people are more educated about Vitiligo & other skin conditions they feel more empowered. With empowerment comes change & that's what the world needs. The world needs to change how beauty is defined. At the meetings I am telling my story and other people will share their stories. Just hearing others are going through the same things really help you feel better about yourself. It will encourage people. Vitiligo and other skin conditions causes mental anguish and the support group will be a safe place for people especially teenagers to be able to just talk about there feelings and not be sad. We will play games & laugh. Laughing is good for the soul. I want to visit elementary & middle schools and teach them about my Vitiligo and redefine was beautiful looks like. Then invite them to my support group. The support group could help in so many ways.
3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?
I have Vitiligo. I was 11 when I was diagnosed. It didn't really start to show until I was almost 13. I was very insecure and sad. I did not love my skin. I was ashamed and always tried to hide the Vitiligo with clothes. This last summer I went to a World Vitiligo Conference and it was amazing. Everyone was so happy & encouraging. It felt good to be around people like me. I learned a lot too. I felt good about myself when we left. When we got home I told my mom I wanted to find a support group in Tulsa. There was none. I decided I wanted to start on myself! So here we are!!!!
4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”
I am stepping up to make a change because I want everyone in Tulsa to feel the connections I made at the Houston conference. I want everyone to feel loved.
5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
When a person gets involved with my project (support group) they will be able to learn about their skin condition. They will have support of others that feel the way they do. Support & education is a big deal. When you feel educated and supported you feel better about yourself and can encourage others.
6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
The difference in this project than others I have looked at is that we are opening our support group to people with any skin condition not just one certain condition such as Vitiligo. The Conference I attended in June was only for people with Vitiligo. While I was there I thought it would be better to open it up to anyone that needs support in learning to love the skin they are in.
7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
Our first meeting isn't planned until Sept.26th but just my Facebook page & group has brought people together and has encouraged them. We are educating people everyday!
8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
We are having monthly meetings starting this month. The 4th Thursday of every month.
We are going to have a Love your skin photo shoot campaign. We are looking for people with varies skin conditions and putting together a calendar.
We will attend the next World Vitiligo Conference to educate ourselves.
We would love to host a conference one day!!!!
9. Which of the following types of expertise would be most useful for you?
10. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?
