Date You Started Your Project Started

Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Start-Up (first few activities have happened)

1. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

Almost 400,000 people in our world experience the tragedy of sexual harassment on the streets, in schools, businesses, and more. With this many incidents accumulating, it is time to come together and stand up for those that have been taken advantage of. I selected the project, We RISE Above, because I wanted my community to understand the effects of sexual harassment, how to be safe, and to raise awareness of this issue.

2. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

Different ways I plan to spread awareness and publicity of my project are through my website, social media(facebook and instagram), presentations at highschool/middle schools, posters/flyers, brochures, and films on survivors/care centers. The website is already in an online format, so I will be able to share it through forwarding, leaving the link in social media bio's, and putting it on the flyers/posters. I plan to speak at middle/highschools in my district to spread awareness of sexual harassment and how it is a relevant, but often under supported, topic. I plan to have a workshop in a public space around the end of December, where we will hold self-defense workshops and have survivors speak of their stories.Starting on August 26th, I plan to start printing brochures with information and statistics to be passed around schools for teenagers to accompany themselves with this topic. I plan to pass out stickers for people to put on their water bottles, binders, laptops, cars and more. By doing so, by December 15th, I will have spoken to and reached at least 400 teenagers and 100 adults about sexual harassment and violence. I also plan to work with the #METOOMOVEMENT and Waymakers.

3. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project?

Achieving the Girl Scout Gold award was one of my biggest dreams. However, I wanted to make sure I made an impact on my community. I selected the project, We RISE Above, because I wanted my community to understand the effects of sexual harassment, how to be safe, and to raise awareness of this issue. Within many School Districts, multiple incidents of sexual harassment between teachers and students have appeared and districts have tried to cover it up by not releasing it to the public. For example, according to LosCerritosNews.Net, supposedly an ABCUSD teacher was accused of inappropriate interactions with a middle school student. Many harassment cases have occurred in colleges, I also chose this topic because I believe it is important for parents to teach how to be safe with situations with predators. I believe in order to be safe, it requires knowledge of how to prevent it beforehand.

4. Selfie Elevator Pitch: Include 1-minute video that answers the following “I am stepping up to make change because...”

I am stepping up to make change because sexual harassment between students, adults, and teachers is a problem that families should be aware of. Sexual harassment is one of the most common issues in our society. It is constantly reenacted everyday but no one seems to speak . Every 92 seconds, someone is sexually harassed but gone unnoticed. It is a major problem our society faces but no one does anything about or speak up for. We can increase people’s exposure to this topic by my campaign.

5. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

When a person gets involved with my project, they will start to receive posters, flyers, and brochures about sexual harassment statistics, prevention, and causes. They will learn more about incidents that have occurred near by and how they can be safe during these situation and receive emails of stories from sexual harassment survivors. They will also receive a shirt and sticker for joining the movement. There will also be a sexual harassment workshop available for people to come learn self defense, meet survivors with stories, and gain resources. If they are a high schooler in the the Cerritos community, they will be witnessing an awareness week at school where each day will be highlighting a different type of sexual harassment and learning how to prevent the situation from further occurring. They will Receive brochures and flyers during their classrooms to learn more about.

6. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

A major X-factor about my project is that it pertains mainly to the youth and their families. MY project/campaign stresses the importance for highschoolers to understand the effects of sexual harassment, how to protect themselves from predators, how to handle different situation, and when to call for help. My project has unique ways of utilizing social media to educate more and more young people of this century. It has campaign gear such as t-shirts and sticker and posters for teachers to hang up on their classrooms for kids to remember what to do during those situations.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

Different methods and tools include using google forms/surveys, facebook likes/shares, and creating a video of people's responses to the workshop and what they have learned from reading the brochures and watching the videos. The facebook/social media posts can show peoples reactions towards the projects and how many people are viewing the posts.I will keep close track of my project’s followers on social media through instagram and facebook. The google forms can reveal what the participants of this project truly learned and felt about the workshop/presentation.I will evaluate the impact of my project using several methods. I will include an accessible survey link on my website and send it to people through forwarding, so that participants may type any complaints, ideas, suggestions, and comments. I would like to also see changes occurring in the school districting and keep the films.

8. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

To take my project to the next level would be through the film that will be located on youtube and played throughout classrooms in highschools, an iphone iapp, an online website, stickers ,and new brochures that will be distributed to everyone. Through these resources, I hope that highschoolers will understand the seriousness of this issue and how they need to protect themselves in the future when they go to college on their own for the first time. The website will be continuously updated for as long as I can. I also want to be able to go onto a broadcast for more people to reach my project. I will also create a club at school where people can continue to spread awareness and create projects to spread this movement beyond my involvement.
