Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Start-Up (first few activities have happened)

1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."

In our community, we noticed that many people have very busy lives and they do not have the time to monitor and stay updated on their personal health. Many members of our community have expressed their difficulty in making smart medical decisions, even after investing in smart health device ecosystem. What made us really spring into action was when one of our close friends was diagnosed with an illness. He ended up having to wait weeks to see a doctor, and we realized that this kind of wait time was not going to cut it. Weeks went by, and then our friend contacted us again. He said that not only did he have to wait weeks for treatment, but he also received unnecessary testing that only raised his medical bills and diminished his health. Hearing of this, we decided to act and create a platform where people could enhance their health through real-time monitoring via smart wearable devices.

2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

Every day, 177,000 Americans will visit a doctor even though they have absolutely no symptoms. $2 billion are wasted on these unnecessary appointments. In addition, when healthy individuals visit a doctor, they have an increased risk of getting an unnecessary test, contributing to an estimated $210 billion in additional healthcare costs and 30,000 deaths each year. Conversely, due to these factors, the average wait time to see a Boston doctor is

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

ilera has developed an intelligent, data-driven platform that analyzes health data in real-time. It is able to take numerical data (heart rate, weight, etc.), from a user’s wearable devices, and feed it through a symptom parser which translates these measurements into health symptoms. Along with any manual user input, collected via an artificial intelligence powered chatbot, the platform analyzes and then presents the conditions, accuracy, and urgency associated with these symptoms. Based on the results, ilera promptly recommends next steps that are catered to the individual via both a Smart Information Feed and a Community Health Platform. Our Smart Information Feed extracts credible online articles, from publications such as MIT Medical, that are related to a user's current condition. We are also developing a community platform where people can connect with other people with similar illnesses to share their solutions. Both the Smart Information Feed and Community Based Solutions inhibit Patent-Pending status. Ultimately, it is a comprehensive platform that allows users to address their health concerns and organize as well as understand what further actions need to be taken.

4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

For the past few months, we have had a small group of adults beta testing our product. One of these adults had a very busy life, so he wasn't able to personally check his health data as often. On one particular day, our platform was doing an analysis and we found that the adult was showing signs of heart palpitations, even though he didn't know it himself. Our platform classified the situation as urgent and recommended him to go see a doctor. When he went to the doctor, it was found that he did in fact have minor heart palpitations. ilera was also able to provide the doctor with a generated report of his previously collected health data, and the doctor notified us that the data was useful. ilera was truly able to make a difference for this adult as we were able to quickly notify him of a condition through our continuous analysis.

5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Currently, no other company is able to continuously analyze wearable health data and produce instant insights from it. In the consumer market, many people have wearable devices, but they aren’t able to have proper analysis conducted on their data. Current solutions, such as Ada, require users to manually input their health data and symptoms into long questionnaires, but we are able to provide insights instantly without any user input.

6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

Our project has made a significant impact on our community so far. In Nashua alone, we have 47 customers and each one of them has personally told us that they enjoy the usefulness of our product. We have also established connections with 2 mentors who are experienced in the medical field, and we are also currently in talks with another professional who has connections to Aetna Health. Although they have only been using our platform for a few months, a few of our customers have also given feedback on how our product has made a difference in their lives. Before using our platform, one of our customers said that he rarely had the time to check up on his health data and make well-informed medical decisions. After using our platform for 2 months, his few visits to the doctor were much more efficient and his doctor said she was much more confident when making decisions on care and testing.

7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

By next year, we are looking to acquire 200 customers and form a partnership with ApiMedic, a Swiss-based company that specializes in medical symptom analysis. We are also looking to work with professionals in the medical field in order to further promote and improve our product. Since the most popular wearable device that we work with is Fitbit, we are also looking to further our integration with the platform in order to gain more traction in the market. We also aim to get venture funding so that we can improve our product and advertise our product on a wider scale. In terms of location, we are also looking to expand into other communities throughout New England.

8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?

We currently have 3 founders and a mentor who is experienced in the medical field. We are planning to establish a partnership with ApiMedic, which is a Swiss-based company, to further improve our analysis of medical symptoms. As for funding, we are looking to use the money in so that we can further implement our product and continue development. Currently, we have been working out of the Cambridge Innovation Center in Boston, and we also have our own website at: www.ilera.life

9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?

  • Family support
  • Mentors/advisors

10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.

We could partner with other changemakers to promote our ideas and encourage young people to go out and make changes to the world. By simply going outside and talking to people, our team was able to get significant feedback and we learned many things just from talking to others. All it takes is a willingness to go out and actually talk to others, and young people will be able to make change. We have encouraged other people to make a difference in our community by sharing our experiences: Although we were nervous at first, going out to talk to others, being confident, and putting our minds to it made all the difference for us. We could share our ideas with other changemakers and collaborate to learn the unique aspects of how we are able to make a difference. In addition, we are also open to learning about other effective ways of getting others involved.
