Date Started

May/16/2017 It has been over a year since I’ve started.

Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Idea (hoping to get started in the future)

1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."

Raised with 2 parents struggling to make a living, I was 1 of many children who regularly heard the phrase, “why is gas so expensive?”I used to ponder with my father about the pricing of gas and new concepts of technology that could be used to help mitigate financial issues caused by high gas prices affecting low-income families, but also all drivers.I was becoming more aware of environmental issues around me, specifically the increasing rate of global climate change and its effect on the world. In 2008 gas soared up to $4.This impacted a lot of families around me because not many could afford to spend the most money on gas.I wanted to make powering vehicles easier for families and drivers.I wanted to create something that’ll help reduce the environmental impact of of fossil fuels. With fossil fuels as finite resources and the environment being harmed, we worked hard to find a solution.

2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

The problem I’m helping to solve is the environmental effects our vehicles are causing on our world and the financial issues pressed on drivers caused by high gas prices. The problem is still around because cars causing these issues are creating harmful gases into our world and electric cars have proven to be costly for many drivers.Solving this problem matters because people’s healths are being harmed with pollution and needless financial issues.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

I'm planning to solve this problem by creating a car that’ll run strictly on wind which'll turn 37 turbines installed within a car. These turbines will generate electricity powering a battery which'll simultaneously power the car.The driver won't be using fossil fuels or be expelling noxious gases. This way our fossil fuels will last longer and less pollution will occupy our atmosphere. Also pedestrians and plants won't be exposed to toxic gases.Having my research confirmed by engineers and professors across Central Ohio,I plan to organize a team of engineers and physicists to help build my first prototype. After building and testing my first prototype and getting sales,I hope to began mass production. Because these vehicles will cost less to build and my goal is to make eco-friendly cars affordable, I plan to sell them at inexpensive prices to make accessing alternative energy cars affordable and accessible for all drivers. After analyzing the impact of my project,I wish to present to major manufacturers and automakers in order to partner and cooperate to manufacture their vehicles into our eco-friendly systems so that we can promote an eco-friendly car industry all around the world.

4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

A mom with kids, works from a long drive from home, and drives a car that runs on gas.She drops her kids to school and drives to work.Coming home, she realizes her tank is nearly empty. With only so much money in her wallet, she notices that she can only spend so little on gas to ensure that her kids have something to eat. Stressed at home, she looks up affordable ways to commute.Public transit costs less, but doesn’t reach her destinations for them to get to work and school on time.Electric cars will let her save a lot of money to power her car,but it initially costs too much for her.The next day,as she presses on her gas pedal she witnesses tailpipe emissions blowing in pedestrian's faces as nearby plants suffer from the toxic gas. With my idea, she wouldn’t have to worry about her tank going empty,be stressed, harm pedestrians or the environment, and would be able to afford an eco-friendly car.

5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

There are many solutions tackling environmental issues caused by cars such as hybrid electric cars. These are kind of efficient because the driver doesn’t have to visit the gas station a lot,but they're still harming the environment by using gas and rising the rate of depletion of our fossil fuels. Secondly, we have made electric cars. These are very efficient because they don't harm our environment or raise the rate of depletion of fossil fuels. But,they are awfully costly. My solution is different because it doesn't use fossil fuels,is affordable, and makes our environment a greener place.

6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

As of today I’ve presented my project to a total of 67 professors, engineers, investors, physicists, and teachers. With my project initiated the following benefits will affect the world; -influence the movement towards an eco-friendly car industry -protect animals and marine organisms from toxicity -slow down the rise of global warming -fossil fuels will last longer -reduce the # of wildfire occurrences, deaths, and destruction -deter the # of droughts, heatwaves, and hurricanes expected to happen -reduce the rising of sea levels -allow the Arctic Ocean to stay frozen longer -expel tailpipe emissions -drivers won’t have to pay for gas/electricity -drivers will save $500-$4000 yearly -drivers will save about 4 hours of time yearly -drivers will help keep the environment a greener place -allow drivers to experience using an electric car in an affordable and enjoyable manner.

7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

1)This summer we plan on meeting with Pres. of the Ohio Academy of Science,Performance Academies, and Pres. of CRCHS 2)Meet with engineers to began building prototypes 3)Meet with investors,granters,eco-friendly activists, organizations, charities and sponsors to gain support 4)As we are currently working on developing a business plan,we plan to finish it this summer 5)Sign up for grants, competitions, hold fundraisers to fund our project 6)Sell vehicles slowly at first towards mass-production while collecting testimonies for future advancements 7)Partner with leading automakers to manufacture their vehicles into our eco-friendly systems This will be an intense project but we’re committed to making it a success for the good of our world.

8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?

-Funding to help build prototype and then vehicles -A space to manufacture/sell our eco-friendly vehicles -Team members consisting of car manufacturers and engineers to help build and design eco-friendly vehicles -Sponsorships from eco-friendly activists, companies, organizations, universities, charities, celebrities, and government officials to help promote eco-friendly vehicles around the world -Mentorship on patenting and writing a business plan to attract investors -A website to attract interested drivers and partners -A testing site to test the vehicles at different air densities, speeds, temperatures, and pressures -Advertising space to promote eco-friendly vehicles

9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?

  • Friend support
  • Family support
  • Mentors/advisors
  • Donations between $100-$1k

10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.

I've presented to my Chemistry/Physics teachers and Intern Coordinator, who exposed me to engineers, physicists, and the Intel ISEF. Connecting with the Pres. of the Ohio Academy of Science. I competed at science fairs and networked with many engineers, physicists, and professors. For example,I networked with Pres.of Franklin Co.Chapter of the OSPE,Benjamin Brown.I've presented to the Dir./Asst. Director of Development and Principal/Asst. Principal of CRCHS,who offered me connections and mentorship on presenting and fundraising. At my internship,IGS, I've presented to my supervisor and rotation analyst to hone presentation skills and get exposure to people in my field of work.Through IGS,I networked with Mark Gordon,a CNG engineer, and Jerald Brevick,Dir. of Otterbein Univ.'s Dept. of Engineering. They helped me expand my research.I've presented to my dad who connected me to Dan Pearlman,a news personality,to hopefully make a story on the news for support.I hope to work with other changemakers and young leaders to promote a greener environment through advertising, workshops, and volunteer programs, and provide green vehicles for events so they don't pollute the world while making a change.

This is amazing and brilliant, but I am curious...how can I along with many of my peers save about $4000 each year?

Photo of Mamoudou Bah
Team

Thank you Dawit Cholemo ! I truly appreciate your interest in our project and its impacts on the world and drivers! Firstly, according to CNN Money, http://money.cnn.com/2011/05/05/news/economy/gas_prices_income_spending/index.htm, the average American spent about $368 each month on purchasing gas alone. In a year of 12 months, the average American would have spent about $4,417.08 on gas alone. My system doesn't require the purchase of gasoline at all. Not even a penny! So with our system Dawit Cholemo , you would save about $4000 because you will no longer be purchasing gasoline. I hope that answers your question! Please don't hesitate to contact us through Gmail either at mbah2020@student.cristoreycolumbus.org or elhadjsbah@gmail.com. Thanks!

I was reading through your proposal and I'm very curious as a physics student. Aren't you talking about perpetual motion? I mean the energy you're creating comes from the drag caused by your turbine fans. And since your turbines cannot have efficiency over a 100%, you cannot create more energy than the amount of drag you get on these turbines.
Of course, there might've been things that I'm not aware of or mistook and you would've spent more time working on this. I would really want to know and learn the design and why you chose 37 turbines. If you figured out how to make this work, it's a huge deal and I would really want you to pursue it. Best of luck!

Photo of Mamoudou Bah
Team

Nice to meet you Achintya Kumar and thank you very much! I am very glad yet astonished, that you were able to relate our project to a perpetual motion machine. Halfway throughout our research we began to realize that our system was intertwining with perpetual motion machine which would have made our system a failure. So we made some tweaks and created new variations to overcomes issues concerning the relationship between speed, drag, and energy production of the system. You are very intelligent and we would love to work with you @Achintya Kumar! Please don't hesitate to contact us through Gmail at either mbah2020@student.cristoreycolumbus.org or elhadjsbah@gmail.com. Thank you and I hopefully look forward to seeing you at the ChangeMakers Challenge Lab where we can explain more about our system and it's functions and speak more upon this matter!

Your idea is very interesting. Assuming that the idea of using wind power works, what would you do to make your car cost less than a traditional electrical car so that it is affordable? Also, what steps would you take to ensure that the production of the car is environmentally sustainable?

Photo of Mamoudou Bah
Team

First off, I greatly appreciate your interest in our project @Aidan Kelley! Firstly, electric cars carry huge batteries with numerous kilowatts to store electricity which would be used to power the vehicle. Such huge batteries cost a lot ranging in the thousands. In our system we have concluded with a 10kW battery. As you can see, our battery has a much smaller size compared to batteries of many other electric cars in the auto industry. Secondly, there are numerous steps I can ensure that the production of our vehicles are environmentally sustainable. We can use as much recyclable materials as possible to manufacture the frame and other parts of the car. Though it will be done moderately to make sure that we are selling high-quality vehicles. This is because if we sell low-quality vehicles, consumers will be discouraged to purchase eco-friendly vehicles. This would put us all back the state of harming of environment and not being able to access eco-friendly vehicles. There are many other things we could do. Matter of a fact, we would love to discuss this with you more @Aidan Kelley. Please consider contacting us through Gmail either at mbah2020@student.cristoreycolumbus.org or elhadjsbah@gmail.com. I also love those deep questions you asked. Thank you!

Great idea ! I truly think that this wind powered car will help change the world and save us humans lots and lots of money ! I also think that is great to see how you want to change the world and reduce how much we pollute the atmosphere. I believe that this car would help reduce it by a lot ! Keep up the great work !!

Photo of Mamoudou Bah

Thank you very much for the support @Kevin Brown Jr!

Photo of Christopher Hepburn

Keep up the great work! I would love to see this as a reality so I myself can save money and time every year and stop harming the environment.

Photo of Mamoudou Bah
Team

Thank you @Christopher Hepburn! Same here! I would love to see you along with many other drivers saving about $500-$4000 and 4 hours of time every year, also saving the environment!

Photo of Tyshaud Edwards
Team

I too wanted to buy an electric car this summer, but the prices are insane. How are we able to access these vehicles that are supposed to help our environment if they're so pricey? This is exactly why we need you to continue your work. Keep it up and expand your connections to one day make our world a better place.

Photo of Mamoudou Bah
Team

I honestly agree with you @Tyshaud Edwards! Prices shouldn't deter humanity's path to a greener world at all. We will surely continue to expand our connections to make our project a success!

Photo of Tyshaud Edwards
Team

This is really big kid keep with it because you might really turn our economy around. Also, I am in great awe concerning the environmental impacts your project will have. I also recognize the high gas prices as many of us will be spending a lot of gas money on road trips.

Photo of Mamoudou Bah
Team

Thank you @Tyshaud Edwards! I hope to be able to turn our economy around and make vehicles more affordable for all driver. Concerning the high gas prices expected this summer, I am sorry to say that our gas prices will continue to get higher and higher every summer as resources slowly deplete. But, worry not @Tyshaud Edwards, with this project the rate of depletion of resources will be reduced drastically, thus gas prices will not end up as high as expected. I hope that with this project, you along with many other drivers will be able to save a good amount of money for transportation during road trips!

Awesome idea, honestly! I love that you are working to adapt to an ever changing world! Hopefully others will see how beneficial this can really be for the earth. Great job!

Photo of Mamoudou Bah
Team

Thank you! Yes, I totally agree with you @Daizy Asante, that this project will be beneficial to the Earth. We have gained countless provisions and gifts from the Earth for centuries, it is only reasonable for us as humanity to find a solution to stop harming our precious land at the best of our abilities!

Photo of Christine Donovan
Team

Great idea. I especially appreciate your interdisciplinary understanding of the problem (e.g. environmental, sociological, etc). You have a keen awareness of how your solution has a ripple effect on families, especially on families for whom owning a car may be too expensive, but relying on public transportation is insufficient. Your solution addresses a significant need - creating affordable, reliable, sustainable transportation - in a new way. Well done.

Great presentation and great background knowledge on the situation. This is an amazing and original idea that could save the environment and fossil fuels. Why isn’t the EPA on this yet??? Great work!

Photo of Mamoudou Bah
Team

Thank you very much @Josh! Although this issue has been around for decades the auto industry has yet to find a firm solution that'll stop the environmental problems and be accessible to all drivers. But with this project, we can surely turn things around. Now that you mention it, I would love to work with the Environmental Protection Agency! I will put them down as a possible partner in the future for sure! Thanks!
