Project Stage: Select the description below that best applies to your approach.

  • Idea (hoping to get started in the future)

1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."

There is a problem in the United States of throwing away perfect, useable medical supplies due to a misspelled word or instruction on the packaging and I would like to recycle those and reduce the amount of unnecessary waste that is formed.

2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

The idea behind this concept is to solve the problem of unnecessary waste when there are people that are in need of these supplies but are unable to access them due to lack of funds.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

I would like to form a 501C3 (non profit) so companies are encouraged to donate those particular items for a possible tax deduction. I would also like to work initially in Texas, as that's where I'm based, to make a space where companies can donate sealed medical supplies that are primarily items that they can't use due to misspelled printing or other minor defect.

4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

Hypothetically, when a person or group gets involved with my project, they will host multiple drives where companies can donate their items or ship their items to a supply space. Then, the supplies will be distributed primarily to free or low cost clinics that help communities and as well as places like homeless shelters. Another way to get a person or group involved is by giving them opportunities to volunteer at these clinics as most of these clinics or pop up clinics are widely understaffed and overworked and giving more volunteers would help in the future long run as well.

5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

The difference about my project compared to other programs is that it will mainly be recycling perfectly sterile equipment to families and communities where healthcare currently, may be a luxury. This project helps not only the community but the companies as well as they would have an opportunity to have a tax deduction for their contribution.

6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

My project will help in raising the health of the targeted demographics and will help in giving people in areas under the poverty line an opportunity to get access to the healthcare that is needed without having to compromise on if they should take care of their health or pay for possible bills that they need to cover.

7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Some ideas are starting off in the free or low cost clinics in impoverished areas of the DFW Metroplex and expanding to areas such as a low cost dental hygiene clinic or various other clinics in the universities that are in the area. Location ideas are space locations that make it easy for people to get to through public transport as some people may not have cars. Long term future partnerships would be with medical supply companies like McKesson for an example or shipment companies that will assist in shipping all the supplies if they come from a remote location.

8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?

Some resources that I have are mentors and advisors that are able to advice me on my current business plan. Some initial support would be funding to register the non-profit, build a website, social media presence, and a space to house the supplies, and start a team. A starting amount would be something around 10k-15k.

9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?

  • Friend support
  • Family support
  • Mentors/advisors

10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.

This idea can create a ripple effect as it makes it so students who are in university organizations that are already built to help the community, like HOSA, Curatio Club, H.A.N.D.S, KEY Club, and spread the idea out and involve other members of the local community to bring up their community or another community.

Help Us Support Diversity! Part 1 [optional] Which of the following categories do you identify with?

  • Asian (for example: Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Pakistani) (9)

Help Us Support Diversity! Part 2 [optional] Do you identify as part of any of the following underrepresented communities?

  • Communities of color

How did you hear about this challenge?

This is an amazing idea Mystica! It's an extremely creative problem that you are looking to solve. I had no idea the amount of medicine that is wasted due to minor issues. With your future non-profit organization, you will be able to supply medicine and basic needs to the less-privileged population. I wish you the best of luck starting your organization.

Thank you so much Phillip Mathew ! I didn't know until I heard about how there are even warehouses that are stocked with new medical supplies that are not even used due to an oversupply! I really wish to reduce the waste that is happening in the world and hope to supply medicine and basic needs to the less-privileged populations.

I think this is a very good initiative to think and an attempt to bring it to practical point of view..just like a human basic needs of having clothes, food and shelter..having assess to basic medical healthcare at a minimum cost is essential too and being a doctor myself ..i would support this cause...good going Mystica.

Thank you so much Esther Thomas I definitely feel like having access to not only healthcare but affordable healthcare for families with a lower income is really important because I understand I have the privilege to gain the healthcare that I have and would like to help in anyway that I can.

Mystica the best way to find ones self is to loose your self in the service of others. This topic is a critical, challenging and this is something that the world need. I pray that this will be an eye opener and people and the world realize it. As the reviewer Joby stated what we lost in humanity this project can uplift and empower less fortunate to meet their needs.
you have my support. Please reach out on how I can be of help.
Blessings.

Mystica Jacob, you are a true motivation! The greatest inspiration is often born out of desperation and it is understood by the cause that you have defined. A change is certainly needed in the health care industry not only in United States but across the world. I pray that you become that instrument of change that is needed for today’s world. I hope you get support across from the world as this is a universal truth. Patience and Perseverance conquers all obstacles. We need a miracle in the medical industry! God Bless You and the cause.

Healthcare is a major issue in this country and helping to reduce waste and inefficiencies will go miles to reduce the cost of healthcare. Keep up the good work.

Brittany Corner Thank you so much! I plan to hopefully expand globally but not in the initial stages as that is a bit more complex and would like to have a strong foundation built in the DFW Metroplex and then go globally. I hope I become one of the top 100 or 25 contestants!
