1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."

I was born and raised in Phillippines. A third world country where education was the way out of poverty. Experiencing that first hand with my mom's family, (her being the first to graduate from University) my passion for education began. Ever since then, I have been involved in the education sector. I've planned hackathons for low-income students in Oakland. I was a president of a now nonprofit organization (I was in office when it was still a student-run organization at Stanford) that provides tech opportunities for low-income schools all over Bay Area. I am now a Berkeley City College student ambassador helping students get comfortable in community college. After hearing students mention how stressed and anxious they are from school and see it lead up to them dropping out it was dreadful. I saw the process and wanted to fix it. I obsessed about it for a year and now, I have a solution.

2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

1 in 3 first-year students does not make it back for their sophomore year, whether it'd be problems due to family obligations, money, or not being able to handle the University stress. All affecting their emotional and mental health. In our 5 years involvement in education as well as being a student, we’ve discovered that emotional/mental health is linked to the low retention rates.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

We solve it by transforming students lives through their class schedule. Revolving their lives on their classes, current college students will be able to plan their future semesters through one on one sessions with a Planyou instructor. It can be done online (through Skype) or offline (meeting up in a cafe). We will be offering workshops, curricula, and drop in hours in partnership with schools, libraries, and youth-serving organizations to reach High School Seniors and Juniors pursuing higher education through the community route or four-year route. One-on-one sessions will typically last an hour and within that time an instructor will cover their lifestyle, work schedule, time management skills, study habits, family obligations, desired time frame they plan to graduate or transfer, and lists of Universities they want to transfer in. Workshops work the same but in a group setting. Curricula are worksheets for Planyou to help High School seniors plan the classes they need to take once they enter college and for High School juniors to help them find a major, career paths, colleges their lifestyle fits in, and strategies to afford college aside from FAFSA as a working student.

4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

21 year old, Eliot is a first-generation student. He just dropped his spring semester classes because he was overwhelmed. He is also part of REACH center and they implemented a Planyou workshop this summer. He went to one in hopes it’ll help him get back to college without overwhelming himself. After the workshop, the outcome of Eliot’s future schedule is organized in a way each semester is divided into one hard class and one easy class based on his strength, weakness, and desired time to transfer. He will be taking four classes in total, two that are his weakness (Math and English) and two that are his strengths (African-American studies and business). Combining all four classes will balance out his priorities. *see image attached as "eliot's schedule"*

5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

Planyou is different from academic coaches, counselors, and other scheduling company like abl. because Planyou focuses on a student’s class schedule and how they can manipulate it to fit everything they want to do while being able to handle it. We take what the academic coach and school counselors provide a student, and organize it so all students will have a stress-free school year while managing extracurricular, work hours, and/or other life obligations.

6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

Planyou is initially still in its idea stage. However, we have been piloting one-on-one session to three students while also developing the business. All students we've piloted with are from different backgrounds and have different needs as a student. One of them actually came back to add more universities in his plan because he was considering transferring to a historically black college.
Although, Planyou is still at its idea stage. It is highly valuable to community college students and those who are entering a four-year institution. All kinds of students with a precise schedule produced by Planyou will less likely begin to have mental and emotional health issues something Universities have tried to work on and off in. A Planyou schedule will also help them retain in college.

7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Planyou hopes to bring in clients that are youth-serving organizations for the remaining of the year (2018). 2019 will be the year of expansion. Hiring more instructors such as online and offline instructors for the one-on-one session, workshop instructors who will be delivering workshops in various areas, and advisors to help create curricula by 2020. We also will start purchasing more swags to give out after our workshops such as tote bags and a foam board to use when the workshop is in session. Planyou will have a goal of acquiring 20 new clients and 12 new partners by the end of the year. The goal would be having 5 new clients and 3 partners for every financial quarter. All clients and partners will still be in SF Bay Area.

8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?

Resources Planyou needs to become a reality is the power of word of mouth and advertisements. Everyone needs to know Planyou exist. Continued funding to help get Planyou off its feet will help pay: the website and Google G suite maintenance. It will additionally help cover pay for the current instructors and both me (founder) and CFO, (chief finance office) who currently oversees the financial stance of the company. All funding will help Planyou run as successful social impact driven company while in our transition from the idea stage to start up stage.

10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.

Current partners are Youth Impact Hub and United Roots in Oakland, California which provides Planyou a place to meet, plan, and have future workshops at. Since 2018 is focused on getting Planyou's first clients and customers, 2019 will be the year we expand more in getting partnerships. We will be reaching out to other EdTech companies in the Bay Area such as MakeSchool, an alternative tech university, who can provide Planyou attendees discounted to their technology tracks in exchange for infinite partnerships in advertising their company through our connections and students.
Literator, a software in helping students be literate, can provide Planyou stickers as part of our SWAG giveaways in exchange for referring Planyou student affiliates to apply for their internship apprentice. Classadoo, a software helping students learn to code, can refer their students to Planyou in exchange for infinite partnerships in advertising through our connections and schools, students, and youth-serving organizations affiliated with Planyou. We also hope to partner with previous changemaker winner: College Pathways from Rikers Island. We can exchange alternative ideas to support students.

This is a good idea! I know that college students are already stressed out enough with school in general, so helping them space things out to make them more manageable is a good idea. A way you could make this even stronger is to look at some of the ripple effects this type of program has on the other areas of a student’s life and pointing out those factors. By helping reduce some of the stress and pressure from scheduling, it may free students up to be able to work part-time, participate in extracurricular activities, or simply relax. Exploring these potential benefits could really drive excitement from potential candidates for your project and get them involved.

Overall, this is a really cool concept and I can’t wait to see how it evolves!

Thanks Anthony. Planyou does take into consideration if they have a part-time job, want to participate in extracurricular activities, simply relax, or even time for homework. We consider their lifestyle as whole to create a class schedule that reduces stress.
