  • Idea (hoping to get started in the future)

1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."

Hi, I'm Carson and I am stepping up to make a change because there are people in desperate need of aid and I would like to make that happen. Although you may never have been there yourself it is well known that Southside Chicago is legendary for its violence. This has forced hospitals to become more efficient with their limited resources. The Southside of Chicago is home to some of the worlds most efficient emergency rooms as a result, but what happens when money simply runs out, when patients must be turned down due to lack of resources? This is what has motivated me to make this change, turning away a patient within the United States seems barbaric and as the media and politicians continue to debate the issue of violence little is done to solve this issue.

2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

Although trauma centers and hospitals exist in the region, there are many hospitals which are restricted in terms of money or direct resources which need more to be able to treat their patients in a complete manner. This problem is constant and will continue until some organization or local government aids these facilities.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

Via fundraising or varies activities such as blood drives, money/resources would be collected and donated directly to hospitals in need of greater resources. Methods to achieve this can take a variety of forms. Cooperating with local organizations such as schools to raise awareness and/or host blood drives, or other school events connected to our work is one example. It is also viable to collect direct donations to our website. However, I believe the best method is created by finding local groups willing to help spread the word and online advertising in conjunction with organization sponsored events such as local blood drives would provide the best approach.

4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.

For example, if a hospital such as Roseland Community Hospital, which earlier in 2018 nearly had to close its doors due to lack of funding, came to our organization requesting aid, a local campaign would be launched to fundraise, or bring attention to a lack of resources such as blood, in an attempt to essentially get whatever the hospital needs to run at full capacity. This campaign would include attempts from our side to get local groups involved working with local schools and the township to raise awareness. Assuming we had a functioning website, online donations would be split across different hospitals, based on need, greater needing hospitals receiving more than less needy hospitals.

5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?

What sets us apart is our direct nature, we aren't simply dealing behind the scenes, we would like to be involved at every step and ensure as much of raised resources make it to the hospital directly. Additionally, there is a great need to solve this issue and we would like to be the spearhead in this front, in terms of bringing both attention and direct aid.

6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

Although we are simply an idea, if a direct avenue for people to aid local hospitals in need was to exist you could almost be sure of its success. This conclusion can be derived from visually seeing how many Chicago citizens actively protest and attempt to bring more attention to the issue, however, there simply is not a large organization to complete the process and organize a system to directly donate and help these regions.

7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?

Within the next year, we would like to hit the ground running, completing our charity both legally and fundamentally. If success within Chicago is found there is nothing restricting the organization from expanding to other cities or areas in need. There is simply no limit and it would be feasible to expand to the entire Midwest region or even going national in time.

8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?

The hardest restriction would be getting our name out there and maintaining a public image, a website is a must, and we would hope that with crowdfunding the organization would flow and continue to operate. Additionally, if the organization is to ever scale a small team must be arranged, but that is far in the future.

9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?

  • Friend support
  • Family support

10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.

We have partnered with both family, and friends within the real world, but would be more than happy to partner or engage with other changemakers who desire to aid and assist low-income areas. Our mission is to aid the needy, which is a broad term and allows for both new ideas and the expansion of our own.

I praise you for wanting to better your community's medical aid. I know it's also necessary where I live, so hopefully you'll be able to expand all throughout the US. Have you tried getting in touch with the American Red Cross? I'm not sure if they can help, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Keep up the good work!
