"SPIN" (SINGLE PARENTS IN NEED)
SPIN (Single Parents in Need) is a mobile application created to provide single parents with affordable and accessible resources.
This is a photograph of my mother when she was younger. The reason why my mom is such a divine being is that of her resilience towards life. She too was raised by a single mother, but contrary to my upbringing, she was in an abusive and violent household. At the age tender age of 10, she witnessed the murder of her mother who was shot 17 times in the chest by her 2nd husband who was not the father of my mother. My mom ran away with her sister out of the house and hid behind the railroad tracks.
This is a picture of my mom and me at my 8th-grade graduation. That year I got valedictorian and she was so proud of me. Because of her hard work, she shows me that I can be anything I put my mind too. She has worked and continues to work he butt off to try to provide me with everything I need to prosper. She is the inspiration behind my app. I saw what a toll not having any support can do to a person and I want to help other parents who are struggling with those same needs.

Growth (have moved past the very first activities; working towards the next level of expansion)
1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."
The inspiration behind my project is connected to my single mother. Growing up she basically was forced to play both roles, a mom, and a dad. She was the only one that provided for me and tried as hard as possible to smile even when things got scary. My mom is my hero for the reasons that she will never stop working to provide me with the best future as possible. The mobile application "SPIN" that I want to create will allow single parents to not only access affordable and accessible opportunities and resources but it allows them to connect to other single parents in the area for advice and all-inclusive support groups. The app is a big platform for other apps to showcase what items and resources they provide. It would be in the hopes to showcase five-star apps with amazing reviews. This is such an important topic because I know how hard it is to raise a baby on your own.
The inspiration behind the app.
2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
The problem is single parents not knowing about these opportunities available to them. A lot of organizations and companies have these great resources but many people aren't aware of them. Often some things cost too much, or people cannot access them all. I have collected data from a fair amount of Americans and asked them "What is something would have wanted access to while raising your child?" By a consensus, I took the data and found apps.
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
I would use the app to showcase these many different companies and organizations by choosing the ones with the best ratings and resources. This app will allow single parents to know about these opportunities that they have been searching for, for years. In the data I collected, the need for an app, that allows you to see who the babysitter is, FBI cleared, their schedule, hourly rates, and ratings from others was highly recommended, for the medical aspect of things, an app that can easily allow you to find a pediatrician near you that takes your insurance and allows you to schedule an appointment is wanted, which cuts down the tedious amount of time spent calling each office near you, a how to center where you find videos and articles on how to do certain things pertaining to your child is wanted as well. So while in the process of creating the app, I took all of these suggestions into consideration and made it my job to research and find the best applications that already exist to not only partner with them but to allow them to gain publicity.
4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
Once the person downloads the app, once it is clicked on, they are introduced to the SPIN survey. This survey allows us to collect information on the person so we can input the data collected into something called a persona. A persona is a basic wireframe that presents us with a picture of the person and the information they have inputted. Once we have all the data, the person can now start an account and look at how much the membership fee would cost. The fee all depends on your annual income. Regularly it would cost 1.99 to download and a 25 dollar annual subscription. This allows you to have full access to all the showcased apps presented on the application. But, it does not give you access to the therapists. The therapy sessions goes through insurance and will give you an estimate on who your therapist could be or not. If you are not insured the app gives links to insurance apps
5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
firstly, there is no such thing as a mobile application that has these specific resources and opportunities for single parents and gives access to therapy online or in person depending on insurance type. Our world has definitely shifted to a more tech-savvy one. It is time to start having things accessible and easy. There are many websites and articles found online but there is not an app created that has the specific features to help out the parents like mine provides.
6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
So far, I am still in the developing stage, but I have talked to a lot of parents specifically ones at shelters and low-income neighborhoods and while discussing my future plans to pursue this app, one lady named Leslie Allen, single mom of 3, said, "If I would've had access to all of these features my life would have been easier and better". This app not could but will help many parents connect and form relationships through the app.
7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
Taking this project to the next level would include coding and creating the app itself. Next Year, I possibly have an internship with Warner brothers development department and hopefully, I can start learning about developing an app and what software to use. This is the most help I need.
8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?
At my school, they are helping us conduct the interview with different organizations who are interested in helping us pursue our projects. For example, Planned Parenthood branch in Pasadena seemed interested in my idea but they want an executed version so they could possibly partner with me and help promote the app in their offices.
9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?
Help Us Support Diversity! Part 1 [optional] Which of the following categories do you identify with?
Black or African American (for example: African American, Jamaican, Haitian, Nigerian, Ethiopian, Somalian, etc) (8)

How did you hear about this challenge?
