Many kids and teens go through trials and different challenges that may affect them in multiple ways—both in their present and future. The challenges they face could be social, economic, personal, any mix of these, or all of the above. To make matters worse, my generation and the youth in the next seem to lack motivation, which makes it harder to face the trials and challenges on our way. Kids and teens in our community deal with peer pressure, poverty, fear, loneliness, depression and anxiety, suicidal or homicidal thoughts, lack of motivation, anger, family issues, and many more. These are all difficult situations to deal with especially when you are young and with little to no support. This can be extremely hard, and possibly the reason why so many of our youth get lost in this cycle: issues > lack of motivation > more issues > self-fulfilling prophecies > not asking for help > menta
2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
l health issues > less motivation <<< and end up not fulfilling their goals. The shift of our youth’s mindset is much needed. We need programs that help us see that we have a purpose and that all we need is to find our answer to the question “whY Be?” so we can ignite the fire of the passion that is going to help us put into motion a plan to reach our goals.
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
Although there are many other organizations out there most lack the ability to provide one on one conversation with a child and their personal life and future goals. From a young age to now I understand and see how their resources are limited. With this project i would like to provide unlimited motivation and programs. Once you know WHY you want to BE who you dream to be, it gives you a special kind of energy to put a plan into action. So through our organization, YB Motivation Inc, we remind our peers and other youth that no matter what life puts in our way, with purpose, a goal to achieve, and a plan to get there, we can always figure it out. Positive outcome are worth our effort if we have dreams and reasons to achieve them. By providing youth with outlets to engage our potential, dreams, and ideas, we can make sure we all learn the WHY that is going to drive us to become the people we want to BE. And also, that we don’t have to go through life alone. Through activities such as educational programs, leadership seminars, fun engagements, sports, and much more many individuals will be changed and will have what it takes to be as great as they always dreamt they could be!
4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
Before creating YB Motivation I would always motivate those I connect with. My partner in this corporation Thierry Gelin started off as a teen in need of motivation. But through my dedication and this young man’s effort, he grew to become motivation to others as well. Together, we created YB Motivation, Inc. with the idea of developing a youth-led group of peer-mentors and leaders to help motivate others into action and making change! To accomplish this we have been working on engaging more of our peers and seeking support of other mentors in the professional world through networking with local organizations. Build relationships that will support our organization. Our group meets, discusses issues or challenges we may be facing, ideas we might have been considering, or ask questions to the group.
5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
YB Motivation is youth led and driven through peer-leadership and mentoring—under the premise that we, as youth, share some lived experiences that can be similar to those of others. Together we focus on finding solutions to help individuals like ourselves, through flexible, open and creative leadership, mentoring in action, and other empowering activities and engagements.
6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
Interacting with YB Motivation Inc. has been impactful to very few people but even though it is just a few it will make a big difference. So far we have provided young men with a weekly meeting of gathering to talk about whatever it is that is on their mind. Through this gathering we educated these individuals life skills, financial skills, relationship advice, and much more. We have had a lot of young people who were active in basketball however could not afford to play. YB Motivation has created an organized team with a travel league and gave them an opportunity to play at a discounted cost. Although we have not had much funds to attend a game as of yet this sport has brought much knowledge to these young men.
7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
We are in need of seed money to complete the non-profit paperwork to receive 501c3 which will open up more opportunities when we apply for grants and facility usages. YB Motivation Inc also needs funding to enhance some of our existing programs, continue to develop some more creative programming, and to better promote our peer group, our activities, and offer more leadership opportunities for all of us.
8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?
We are building a network with other local non-profits and schools and through our friends and supporters and we know this effort will help us in the long run. These relationships and partnerships will provide us with opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and support as we continue to grow in the community as a youth-led young non-profit organization. We are also looking for other mentors for ourselves, we know we are young and have a lot to learn. We have great ideas, but others with more experience can help us avoid making silly mistakes and figure out ways to bring our ideas into action.
9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?
Donations less than $100
10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.
When you get motivated it is like you ignite an internal fire that then can spread to others as they witness your passion and drive. Each young person with their answer to “whY Be?” means the potential for another young person to figure it out, get motivated, and keep pushing to accomplish their goals!
