Idea (hoping to get started in the future)
1. Personal Journey: What’s the story behind why you decided to start this project? NOTE: All applications must include a 1 minute video that answers: “I am stepping up to make change because..."
Our generation takes 1 million selfies a day and is getting a bad reputation of how much time we spend on video games and social media. With hearing this feedback, we agree that something needs to be done to put this concept into action. Creating connections that encourage action will have tremendous impact in spreading good deeds across the nation and world. We know we can turn the 1 million selfies a day into 1 million good deed actions that will change the course of our generation. We can challenge each other to make a difference, and hear the ECHO from others across the nation (and globe) as we pay it forward through acts of kindness. This app will make a difference and give charity and humanitarian organizations a way to market and reach people engaged in similar positive activities across the world to grow their efforts.
2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?
The selfie syndrome! 1 million selfies a day are exactly that, selfies, why not turn this effort into impact (action)?!
3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.
Create a gamification to "selfless" selfies that reward the users points. If one selfie results in one more good deed action, that user would get one point. If one selfie results in 1,000 good deed actions, that user would get 1,000 points. Our generation loves to compete for badges and status in most of the games we play. Getting us off of the coach to earn points, conquer areas, and compete for national status is just the challenge we need.
4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of what happens when a person or group gets involved with your project.
Echo Effect sends a daily good deed challenge to its users across the nation and globe. Imagine the potential of kids paying things forward! We see the 1 million selfies every day turning into 1 million actions of our generation getting involved in society and making a difference in the future of our world and planet.
5. The X Factor: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there?
Social "ME"dia is focused on getting attention. And let's face it, everyone is glued to their phones. We don't want to discourage selfies, we just want to challenge people, particularly the youth, to use their beautiful (and crazy) pictures to motivate and push others to do some good!
6. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?
Changing a selfie from a funny picture of my brother, Macoy, to a challenge we sent out to family and friends quickly went from coast to coast and resulted in everyone repeating the same act of kindness. We immediately heard feedback from our family and friends that this needs to be something we do each week to get closer to one another.
7. What’s Next: What are your ideas for taking your project to the next level?
We are excited to issue national challenges such as sending a letter to a veteran, packing groceries to a car for the elderly, donating a $1 to a certain charity, handing down sports equipment to a younger generation or serving the homeless. These moments captured in a picture will mean so much more than the silly wink of a selfie today. There is also potential to have a business side where local charities and organizations can get involved in the challenges because of the similar and active audience being engaged in society.
8. Future Support: What are the resources needed to make your vision a reality?
We need the expertise to create a program that can work in parallel with other social networks to turn the likes into action.
9. Finances: If applicable, have you mobilized any of the following resources so far?
10. Ripple Effect: Please share some ideas of how you could partner with other changemakers or involve other young people as leaders in making a difference.
A simple mass text went a long way to get support from our family and friends. We look forward to involving our community!
Help Us Support Diversity! Part 1 [optional] Which of the following categories do you identify with?
White (for example: German, Irish, English, Italian, Polish, French) (6)
Help Us Support Diversity! Part 2 [optional] Do you identify as part of any of the following underrepresented communities?
No, I do not identify with an underrepresented community
How did you hear about this challenge?
T-Mobile page or contact
Referral: If you discovered the Challenge thanks to an organization or person other than Ashoka or T-Mobile, who was it?
My brother and I discovered it on the internet. We went to my dad who is an employee of T-Mobile and asked if he knew the details. He did not know the specifics and if kids could participate, so we decided we would just create the video.
