1.Founding Story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder(s) to get started or the story of how you saw the potential for this to succeed.

As social entrepreneurship majors at Westmont College, Avery Osborn and I saw the power that business had to solve social problems. We were both involved in microfinace projects in Haiti and Uganda. We additionally did a project where we researched existing supply chains, specifically the fashion industry. While we found many companies that were making a positive impact, we also found that many lacked transparency, human justice and sustainable measures. This is where Everoot was born. Our goal is to bridge the gap between the social enterprise and secular business. We believe that every business has the potential (and responsibility) to be a fore for good.

2. The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve?

Many forward thinking companies have joined the movement towards regenerative business and are taking initiative to actively improve their social & environmental performance. Yet, the majority of businesses have struggled to transition into this new economy due to lack of time, resources and information. There's a disconnect here.

3. Your Solution: How are you planning to solve this problem? Share your specific approach.

We want to be a resource for business leaders who are excited and driven to make the transition toward become a regenerative (sustainable) business. We partner with business leaders to help ensure that their company is holistically rooted in its declared corporate social responsibility. From its supply chain transparency to company culture and local involvement. We also help companies create and implement practices that reduce their environmental footprint. From the lifecycle of products to the resources used in facilities. We do this with the help of the B corp certification. After much research and taking a course on B corp consulting, we believe in the power that this certification has for businesses to be a force for good. We partner directly with business leaders as they walk through the B-corp assessment. After getting the results, we identify areas for improvement and design unique solutions relevant to their business to increase their score and company impact. We then help them incorporate the changes and formalize processes to join the broader B-corp movement. Finally, we help measure and share their impact through social media marketing and impact reporting.

4. Example: Please walk us through a specific example of how your solution is working to solve the problem.

We have worked with 5 companies, one of them being Sun&Swell Foods. After sharing with the owner and director the potential we saw for her company to make a greater impact, we were hired to help her take steps toward becoming a Bcorp. Their initial score increased by 50+ points after working with us. Significant changes were made in their company culture (increased wages, formalized employee review process, satisfaction surveys, etc.) environmental practices (recycling, composting, decrease water & energy usage, reduction in carbon footprint, etc.) and community involvement (becoming 1% for the planet, partnering with a local non-profit, increasing worker volunteer hours, etc.).

5a. Too many people in the U.S. have unmet needs for financial products and services. How is your work reaching a population(s) that is currently underserved? If it is not reaching an underserved population yet, how might it in the near future?

By getting more businesses involved in their communities (through financial contributions and volunteered time) there is huge potential to reach undeserved populations. For example, homelessness is a systemic problem in Santa Barbara. We spoke with leaders who were directly involved in homeless initiatives and learned that there is a huge need for business involvement. By increasing the number of B-corps, undeserved communities will be reached at a greater level.

6. Marketplace: Who else is addressing the same problem? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

In Santa Barbara, there are other sustainability consultancies that are specified to one area. We found a number of environmental consultancies and financial consultancies but very little connected to social impact. Everoot consulting is not limited to finances or the environment, we help companies improve holistically and achieve their sustainability goals. There are other B-corp consultancies globally, but none in Santa Barbara. We believe that there is a huge opportunity to help companies in Santa Barbara make the transition toward becoming B-corporations.

7. Impact: How has your project made a difference so far?

We have partnered with 4 companies in Santa Barbara and 1 in Austin, TX. Sun & Swell Foods, Parker Clay, Impact First Financial, Kammok and Impact Hub SB. Of these companies, 3 have reached the score necessary to acquire a B-corp certification and we are in the process of finalizing documentation to receive the certification. To name a few improvements: Recycling & composting programs have been added and formalized, donation and volunteer contributions have increased, and carbon footprints have been reduced (by incentivizing alternative commute methods). We plan to have formalized impact reports moving forward.

8a. Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling your impact?

We plan to begin writing quarterly impact reports to scale the specific impact we are making in companies. Additionally, impact reports are given to companies for them to share their personal impact. We use a variety of metrics including: carbon footprint, undeserved communities reached, waste reduction, financial donations and hours volunteered.

9. Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

As a for-profit we are paid directly by business leaders. To maintain financial sustainability, we plan to have a steady client base of 4 companies per quarter. As we are in early stages of developing this consultancy, we plan to acquire additional funding from outside investors.

10. Team: What is the current composition of your team (types of roles, qualifications, full-time vs. part-time, board members, etc.), and how do you plan to evolve the team’s composition as the project grows?

Currently, Avery Osborn and I, Becky Collier are co-owners and directors. Due to a lack of resources, we have not yet hired more employees. We have a depth in our board of advisors. This includes individuals connected to environmental sustainability, social impact, law, and business development. Moving forward, we plan to expand our team.
