It's possible. Navajo just formed its first CDFI within the past two years and it's taking a looooooong time to get off the ground and hasn't invested/loaned any money in small businesses (yet) despite a $20M fund from the tribal government. However, there's an off-rez CDFI about 3-hours South that we have a good relationship with and that's successfully partnered with other tribes around us. So it's all possible. Our five -year focus is on getting the center up and running and demonstrating value to our local community. Thanks so much for the suggestion!
Thanks for the kind words Sarah! I agree 100% about financial education and support. At the moment things like that don't exist on the rez, just in border towns. I'm very familiar with the ONABEN curriculum. We used to use it in the early days when our model was to go to each Chapter House (our form of local govt) to teach entrepreneurship classes. It's great that there's resources like this to start from. Thanks again!
