In the midst of a successful career as a physician caring for patients with melanoma and their families, I became mobility impaired. I was no longer able to continue practicing in the physically demanding job. I decided to use the many years of accumulated clinical experience to improve the lives of melanoma patient and their families by developing behavioral interventions to improve the early detection and prevention of melanoma.
Thank you for your suggestion. This program seeks to address a gap in the current curriculum of Head Start programs. Chicago area Head Start programs already do a terrific job of providing nutritional guidance and increasing physical activity, but they do not address the need for sun protection during outdoor play. As we work with Gads Hill Center, we may identify other gaps and develop other read-along books and social media boosters to address the needs.
The program will be integrated in the Head Start Program at Gads Hill Center with age appropriate lesson plans that engage the children. After obtaining parental consent, 4 and 5 year old children will learn how to apply sunscreen in stick form, which does not run into the eyes or drip onto the floor.
