After 20 years experience in the tourism industry, I found myself in Luang Prabang. It became evident that you can support rural communities through the tourism dollar. As Ma Te Sai struggled to grow due to Luang Prabang's seasonality, and the competitive environment, differentiation for the business depended on producing contemporary designs, working closely with rural artisans and providing training so they can cater to the foreign market, whilst keeping traditional skills alive. Now I can see how this development keeps young people in rural areas and provides more than just sales.
Thank you. The sustainability relies on sales and marketing, we have our stores but also place our products in hotels on consignment, custom make orders for hotels and attend events. Without good designs, co-creating with our artisans, and constant marketing it would not be sustainable.
